Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 13, 2014 5:06 pm Hi everyone Our building journey has only just begun. We have built 4 times before and thoroughly enjoy the experience. Hopefully this one will go well. * Contract signed in March * Soil test done last week * Waiting on the final plans. SuziQu Re: Our new home - Hickinbotham Inverness 2May 13, 2014 5:20 pm Welcome! 4 times, wow... you must have learned a lot over those last few builds. We are on our second, better prepared than the first build, but I still feel like a newbie most days! The Inverness is a lovely large home. Great floorplan, my first build was with Hickinb0tham, The Wentworth. Not nearly as nice as the Inverness Whereabouts are you building? We are up in Mount Barker. Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=66299 Slab: 16/6/14 Frame: 4/7/14 Roof: 22/7/14 Lock Up: 20/8/14 Fixing: 26/8/14 PCI: 9/10/14 Handover: 20/10/14 Re: Our new home - Hickinbotham Inverness 3May 13, 2014 8:29 pm That is amazing. Four times previously must have been heaps of fun to keep doing it. Had a look at the base plan, looks nice. Interested to see what changes you've done when you get your final plans back. Re: Our new home - Hickinbotham Inverness 4May 13, 2014 9:01 pm Ohhhh we are currently looking into building the inverness if finances allow. hope all goes well. Re: Our new home - Hickinbotham Inverness 5May 14, 2014 2:21 pm Thanks for your comments, we are building near Goolwa on 2 1/2 acres. I fell in love with the Inverness the first time I visited the display home at Freeling. It had that feeling that we all look for in a home, I can't explain it. However, we were waiting on another property to sell before we could go ahead and in the meantime I visited lots of display homes all over the state and nothing came close to that feeling. We have changed it slightly, my husband wanted a ranch style. We have views to the front, so we added a formal dining next to the lounge and a bay window to the main bedroom. We had to increase the family room and kitchen width about a metre, so hopefully it will look good. We haven't seen the final plans yet, only the salesman's rough drawings. When I get a chance, I'll upload the floor plan. We are so excited. Building is so much fun but problems do happen more than you realise. The reasons are many but you and the builder are at the mercy of the contractors. We built in Nairne and Meadows and found that the contractors were not as good as they could have been. If you live in Mt Barker, you may have noticed that getting contractors to even turn up to give a quote is frustrating. We've built with David Knights, Marshall Thompson, Homestead and Sarah Homes and we had problems with every build. The secret is to visit the house as often as possible (I was there every day) and look for problems before they get hidden behind the gyprock. Two of them were going to build in the wrong direction even! We might employ a building inspector this time to keep an eye on things as we live in Adelaide, although if I know my husband we'll be taking some early morning trips to the block!! SuziQu Re: Our new home - Hickinbotham Inverness 6May 15, 2014 1:40 pm I am so jealous Inverness is my dream home... I fell in love with it too the first time I looked at it but unfortunately, it was out of my price range and too wide for my block. May be next time Good luck with the built. Really looking forward to seeing your plans... It sounds really lovely Haha! Yes... We have found that funnily enough. We wanted to try and use local contractors where possible, but as you said - nearly impossible trying to organise them. We have since booked the work to businesses in Adelaide who were more than happy to quote us, show up and take the business. All for a really good price, considering it's only 20 mins up the freeway, it wasn't a big deal to organise. We found most Adelaide businesses were more than happy to get work from Mt B. Lesson learned there! Re: Our new home - Hickinbotham Inverness 9Jun 02, 2014 10:43 am No sign of the plans yet. Waiting, waiting! I have a feeling our wish for a Xmas completion will not happen. Still has to go through Council and I'm not sure how long they take in our area. SuziQu Re: Our new home - Hickinbotham Inverness 12May 18, 2015 5:01 pm I'm back! We had some dramas but the house is well under way. The bricks are being done at the moment. Gyprock is pretty much done. We are doing our own electrical in 2 weeks and the septic (also by us) will be done towards the end. It took just over 12 months between the day we signed the contract and the slab being poured. It has moved very quickly since then. SuziQu Re: Our new home - Hickinbotham Inverness 13May 19, 2015 10:36 pm Hi SuziQu. Congrats on getting this far. The approval process is slow but when they get going things progress quite well it seems. Good luck! I'm at a similar stage as you and mine took about 11 months from signing to foundation pour.
