Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 29, 2014 7:50 pm Hi Everyone, Thank H0me 0ne and the Internet for this site. Its been fantastic reading through the multitude of building stories online. We are planning to build a two storey home in Figtree and have a hefty stack of plans, designs and pricelists from the various builders all over the carpet. I've also read quite a few threads from Brooks Reach but not sure if they would be using the same builders. Finding it difficult to pin down a particular builder based on reviews and reputation scores over the web however (so varied from region to region!) and thought it might be best to just ask the good folk on these boards. Has anyone built in the region recently? Or are currently building? Who did you end up going with? Could you give an idea of what it ended up costing (landscaping, driveways and everything else)? Many Thanks! Re: Built / Building in the Wollongong / Illawarra Region? 2Apr 30, 2014 7:11 am Our place is single story, 32sq, 4 bedroom, study, theatre and we moved in at the end of 2011. This is a guide to prices then: House: $325,600 (including HEAPS of upgrades) After handover: Around $75,000 (including antennae, blinds, carpet, clothesline, driveway/paths, fans/remotes, fence/gates at side, flyscreens, garden shed, landscaping, lighting, mailbox, retaining walls, split systems x 2, wooden floors.) What builders are you looking at? We used one who builds at Brooks Reach and consider our house to have a very high quality finish. Who did you end up building with? Re: Built / Building in the Wollongong / Illawarra Region? 4Apr 30, 2014 9:16 am Barrington Homes. We were moving down from Sydney and had previously built with Eden Brae and found so much about them on the net. This mob had no reviews anywhere, but at the end of a long day at Haywards Bay we walked in to their Bayview display home and it was just what we wanted so we took the plunge and were quite happy with the result. I could have spent less but because we're getting older and will probably never build again I added lots of upgrades just because I could. Regards, Grumbles Re: Built / Building in the Wollongong / Illawarra Region? 5Apr 30, 2014 3:15 pm Nice Who did you use for landscaping? Re: Built / Building in the Wollongong / Illawarra Region? 6Apr 30, 2014 8:20 pm Because we hadn’t lived here long we didn’t know anybody so got the number of a landscaper out of the yellow pages. When we rang him he had just retired and passed his clients to a young bloke he knew. He did a great job and was full of ideas so when you get closer to that part of your build I could pm you his number if you want. He was always busy and heading off to another job so we figured that meant he was good at what he did. Regards, Grumbles Re: Built / Building in the Wollongong / Illawarra Region? 7Jun 10, 2014 2:29 pm Hi, Make sure you do your research, find someone who has built with the project home builders before. It may be advantageous even asking a few of the local architects or private certifiers in the Wollongong area as they are out looking at places day in and out. One of the architects we use is floorspace www.floorspacedesign.com.au. It also helps to get someone to look over your contracts before you sign to make sure what they are saying in the quotation visits actually get onto the contract for example the time period is usually extended on the contracts. I have some FAQ that may help when looking for a building giving a general overview of information you might need - http://wollongongcarpenter.com.au/faq Im only a small renovation and extention builder in Wollongong but if you need any building advice I will do my best to help. Keen to hear from people in the area who have got KDRB done on whom they got the build from? Looking for recommendations.
