Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 05, 2009 8:21 pm For some bizarre reason our water meter is a few meters away from our property (don't ask!) so it won't be behind the fence. The horror stories on this forum about stolen water meters scared me a bit Is there a way that I can secure the water meter even though it is not actually on my property? Short of camping out with a shotgun. I'm assuming that your house is under construction or about to be? Once you're moved in, it's unlikely to be an issue - and during the build, it's normally the builder's problem. Although if it's not on your property, I'm not sure if they take responsibility. Re: Prevent water meter from being stolen 3Jun 05, 2009 8:34 pm I though the water meter was owned by the water supply company. And it it's not on your property, how can you be held responsible? And it it's not on your property, how can you be held responsible? There weren't any meters installed when we started and the water company installed one. But they told me that once we've "taken procession" of the meter it becomes our problem Trying this building gig one more time. Re: Prevent water meter from being stolen 8Jun 05, 2009 9:58 pm ...and who would you be metering the water for? I think it would be problematic if the developers tried to get out of their due costs, by scaming.. and the water Co., well I am sure they own the meters Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Prevent water meter from being stolen 9Jul 20, 2009 8:41 am Ive had this happen to me, builder called me on Friday to let me know our meter has been stolen. They have spoken to the council and the developer and they are both saying its my issue, and they want $830 to put a new one in... WTF A friend checked in with a plumber and his thinking is that its not my property so its not my issue, but reading this is sounds like they wont help me, Im going to call them today Has anyone had any luck getting a council to put one in for free? My view is they can get f'd, if they want to charge me for water they need to put one in, but im pretty sure that wont get me anywhere. Also thinking about calling them to say my water meter is broken and see'ing if the guy that comes out will sell me one cash or something.... $830 so the council can charge me money, yer right Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. So if it gets stolen, it still is your responsibility. Oh, they steal it for the copper content, about 1kg worth... Re: Prevent water meter from being stolen 16Jul 20, 2009 8:18 pm Perhaps it is easier to "move" if you're a ******* plumber who installs second hand (stolen) water meters If you received an old water meter, don't give your plumber's name to the people on this thread Trying this building gig one more time. Re: Prevent water meter from being stolen 17Jul 20, 2009 9:08 pm Ours was stolen. So were all the meters on blocks nearby. If you have enough of them, the scrap metal is worth a lot of money, so there are thieves who go around new estates stealing the things. It wasn't our problem at all. The meter belongs to the water authority and the builder holds insurance over the site and whatever's on it. They just organised a new one with the water authority, we didn't do a thing. Re: Prevent water meter from being stolen 18Jul 21, 2009 10:05 am wakeboardandy why would anyone steal a water meter? Am I missing something here? People also steal water meters to steal water. Like if they have got a swimming pool for example. They put the stolen meter in replace of theirs, fill the pool and then replace it with their own meter and that way it doesn't register on their meter. That's what I have heard not sure if it's true or not. Re: Prevent water meter from being stolen 19Jul 21, 2009 10:20 am brendondanielle wakeboardandy why would anyone steal a water meter? Re: Prevent water meter from being stolen 20Jul 21, 2009 10:34 am When I bought my block the water meter wasn't there - it does have a tap though, so essentially free water for the time being! Doesn't really mean anything as I'm not doing anything on the block yet! I spoke to to SA water and they said they owned the meters and new meters were installed on the whole 8 blocks after subdivision, but only 3 remain by my count!! They also said I was responsible for replacing it for $200 but, if I filed a police report about the stolen meter, 1 should be replaced by United Water (who do the work) free of charge but after that 1, usually I should have to pay. I've decided to not replace it until I actually needed water as there is obviously someone in my suburb trying to plumb their hot water service with the copper!! I personally find it pretty ridiculous that, so they can charge us for water, we have to pay for the meter! It's also a bit harsh that we have to have the water meter sticking out like dogs balls out on the street where anyone can steal it but we are liable if it gets stolen - the least they could do is lock it up and their meter inspectors have a master key or something. I bet if they had to pay for all the stolen meters they'd probably figure out a way to stop people stealing them! At least mine won't cost 800 though!
