Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 04, 2014 10:28 am Hi Everyone, We are planning our new build and wondering what you did with your bathrooms interms of styling. Did you do you main bathroom, ensuite, powder rooms all matching, so same tiles, paint, feature tiles, vanity. Or did you do them individually different? Also what does everyone thinki of floor to ceiling tiling, still tossing up if its worth it or not? Feedback appreciated KD Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 2Mar 04, 2014 10:37 am Hi Kirradog, We had our Bathroom/Ensuite/Powder/Laundry matching - same tiles, same basins, same taps, same laminate and benchtop. I think it makes the house flow nicely, plus it was way too hard to choose different colours for them all! We did floor to 1.5m height tiling on the walls through the builder, looks great. We are planning on getting it done all the way to the ceiling a bit later down the track, it would have cost way too much getting the builder to do it!! Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 3Mar 04, 2014 10:43 am We matched tiles to the ensuite, bathroom and laundry for that nice continuous flow. We have the same vanities in both the Bathroom and ensuite, but picked something a bit different for the laundry cabinets. Still ties in, but seperates it from the 2 bathrooms. We are having the same dark nougat marble that we are having on the bench tops and up one wall as a feature. The floor for the rest will be the same as our floor for the downstairs so that it all flows. Cabinets are all white lacquer to keep it simple. When we met with the interior designer she recommended going the same to keep the flow but to "bling" up the downstairs Powder Room and the Master Ensuite. I think it should look nice but in reality I am not sure anyone will actually notice as the chances of being in multiple bathrooms is unlikely. It is very hard to decide (especially for me) and we wanted a simple but classy look to those areas. Good luck..... Ciao Mark Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 5Mar 04, 2014 3:14 pm We are another that used the same materials in both bathrooms. To differentiate we added a feature wall in the main bathroom using the floor tile and had different designed vanities. In the laundry we used a different tile as cheaper but along the same colour lines as the bathroom. We used the same colour cabinets as bathroom/cabinets but added one cupboard in a different material to break it up a bit. Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 6Mar 04, 2014 6:21 pm in two ensuite bathrooms i had the same colors brown in the main i decided on a different color going with a black and white theme including the freestanding black and white bath . in this bathroom and toilet vanity area also went with floor to ceiling tiles well worth it the main bathroom is well away from the other two ensuites Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 8Mar 05, 2014 3:32 pm Ours are totally different...seem to be the odd one out lol We matched our main bathroom and powder room with the tiles used through the living/dining/entry and halls. They have matching bench and cupboards. We have matched our laundry to the kitchen as it is directly behind it but they have different coloured splash backs. Our ensuite is totally different to the rest of the house but the colour of the cabinets was the inspiration for our dark feature paint colour that we used throughout the house so it does all go together but just a very different theme in ensuite. If you want full height tiling just be aware that if you do it after handover you might have extra costs to remove and replace the cornice so it sits on the tiles or you could tile up to the edge of the cornice. Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 9Mar 10, 2014 3:33 pm Our bathrooms and powder room will match. The kitchen consultant talked us out of matching the kitchen and laundry, she thought that if the laundry looked too good, it can take away from the statement of the kitchen. We ended up going pretty plain in the laundry. Tiling to ceiling after handover can create a problem if the additional tiles you purchase are not from the same batch. The tiling supplier should be able to line this up and order yours at the same time as the builder places their order. Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 10Mar 10, 2014 3:46 pm My main bath, powder room and main bed ensuite match. Light cream floors and dark wood cupboards The laundry and the kids ensuite match - grey floors and white cupboards My build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=68002 Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 12Mar 12, 2014 9:05 am I'd actually ask for one further: We're thinking we'll make the kitchen, bathroom/ensuite and laundry all the same colours. Would that be weird? Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 13Mar 12, 2014 1:34 pm Lol I also went with different tiles in all 3 bathrooms. My reasoning was to stick with builders range for main bath; spend a little more on powder and to spend the most in our ensuite. Basins, bench tops are the same throughout. (Our builder charges extra to change these) Have gone into more detail on our tiles in our blog buildbythebeach.blogspot.com Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 14Mar 12, 2014 1:44 pm Good questions! I'm tossing up about tiling to the ceiling too. It looks awesome, but I haven't looked into costing yet. Re matching tiles selections, I do think it looks best if there is some common theme throughout. So the tiles don't necessarily have to be identical, but perhaps all the same colour with different size and shape, or maybe all the same feature tile with different main tile, etc. We had a walk through a nearly completed custom build home with a builder when we were first looking at different builders last year and I remember thinking it looked so odd that the ensuite was nothing like the other rooms. So the kitchen, bathroom, powder room and laundry were IDENTICAL with tiles and feature tiles (almost too matchy matchy) and were all a beige tile with a blue and green strip of mosaic feature tile. And then the bathroom was black and white tiling. Completely different with no apparent reference to the rest of the house. To me, it looked odd and helped me decide then that I want some common theme to tie the styling of the whole house together. Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 15Mar 12, 2014 2:25 pm My main bathroom and laundry have different colour scheme from the ensuite, but similar to the kitchen. I have done two tone kitchen and used wall cabinets colour for the bathroom and laundry cabinets. The only things which are the same in all wet areas including the kitchen are the bench tops. Wall tiles are different in the kitchen, main bathroom/laundry/toilet and ensuite as well as floor tiles in main bathroom/laundy/toilet and ensuite. I think I will also be doing floor to ceiling tiles as well. Its crazy expensive though, I sure hope the colours go well together. Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 17Mar 12, 2014 9:07 pm Our ENS has all the upgrades. The main bathroom, l'dry and power room is the same colours and type. The kitchen is different and the scullery is different because the kitchen has a stone bench. Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 18Mar 12, 2014 9:30 pm There is no rule, do what you like! My philosophy, you'll never see both rooms at once, so why should they be the same? I wanted to have fun with my ensuite and splash a bit of money around on full height tiling etc. For a bit of consistency, I am tiling to 1m in the other bathroom and powder. Colour schemes below: Ensuite Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Bathroom/Powder Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Laundry is the same as the bathroom and powder, but has a Seal Grey formica benchtop. So they aren't radically different, but not the same either. Good luck making your selections! Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 19Mar 12, 2014 9:33 pm In my current place the bathroom, toilet and laundry have the same floor/wall tiles. But the ensuite is completely different. My logic was the bathroom, toilet and laundry are all next to each other - they're also areas that people tend to visit IE toilet then to bathroom/laundry. So same look i thought was important. Where as ensuite is at the other end of the house, and really only i go in there. To slightly hijack the threat.. what's everyones thoughts on sinks. I think bathroom/powder should have same sinks (if they fit), but ensuite can be different? Re: Matching bathrooms in new build? 20Mar 13, 2014 7:27 am I love those colours! Can I bother you to ask what the cabinetry colour is and the floor tile name? ![]() what's the rationale on this? In my mind, the risk weepholes mitigate isn't solved by acrylic render. 9 76582 We recently moved into our new build.
