Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 05, 2014 5:32 pm I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on this. We have an under-roof alfresco - both it and the backyard directly off it are in shadow from early afternoon because it's the East side. I'm wondering whether it would work extending the slab out beyond the line of the alfresco roof or if it would look weird? Basically for entertaining purposes in the afternoon and evening we could spread the furniture out a bit, the kids would have more room to ride bikes/trikes etc. I just don't know if it's the "done thing" or would look weird having a bit without roof over it. Or would there be some problem keeping the tiles looking okay with some under a roof and some exposed to rain more? This is looking from the patio outwards - you can see how much shade is in the backyard. I thought about extending the concrete slab out further towards the backyard and perhaps also around to the right outside the master bedroom. (Imagine if the shed and trampoline aren't there and the alfresco conrete and tiling continued around there). It doesn't look bizarre at all, they have a smaller table and chairs out there most of the time. It isn't tiled though. The tile thing would be the only thing I would be wary of (hopefully someone who actually has uncovered tiles can offer their opinion), I think the grout would discolour more quickly (possibly nothing a good gurney wouldn't fix) , and I imagine even non-slip tiles would be slippery in the rain. As long as the boys are careful when it's wet it should be ok though Other than that, I think it'd be an excellent use of space - especially with those views you have! 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Extending alfresco slab and tiling beyond roofline? 3Apr 05, 2014 8:48 pm I agree I will have an alfresco overlooking the pool and a deck on the other side of the house - sometimes it's nice being out in the sun <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=62083">viewtopic.php?t=62083</a><!-- l --> Re: Extending alfresco slab and tiling beyond roofline? 4Apr 05, 2014 8:56 pm I think it looks great! We would like to have an alfresco , and then have an uncovered pergola off that wrapping around one side of the house. I think its nice to have a more formal outdoor area that gets full sun Build thread http://tinyurl.com/llgc7yk Re: Extending alfresco slab and tiling beyond roofline? 5Apr 05, 2014 10:17 pm I don't think it would look odd at all. I've seen quite a few places that have done this, and even lived in one. Granted it was exposed aggregate, so I'm unsure how tiles would go under direct sunlight/weather. You might have to investigate with tiles as to which ones are hardy for that kind of exposure. Re: Extending alfresco slab and tiling beyond roofline? 6Apr 06, 2014 2:26 am I think it's a great idea. You can definitely get tiles that are rated for external use, and not as expensive as you might think. Re: Extending alfresco slab and tiling beyond roofline? 7Apr 06, 2014 7:47 am i think it is a great idea i have tiles around the pool and they have been fine . so having them not under cover and as a deck would be great.
