Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 04, 2014 10:12 am Hi All, Bit of a dilemma here. Was hoping to get a general consensus on the necessity of having a home cinema room. We are planning on building with a project home builder. We love the floor plan as displayed ( the floorplan sizes are the same as displayed no extensions.) However we're thinking whether or not to add a Home cinema room. Formal dining and lounge seems to be a non existent space these days and the home cinema would replace that space ( at the front of the home) if we decide that this may be worthwhile. However the family room is massive the alcove for the tv would be around 4 meters in length approximately and the entire area is very spacious. So we're thinking would our future kids actually sit in the home cinema room and watch a movie/will we? The family room is next to the alfresco which is huge as well. Most of the activity would be centred around these living zones. I.e entertaining in general. What do you all think? Does a home cinema room get used often? It would be another 20k in total for that space. Then the added cost of purchasing the equipment and furniture to decorate it. Is it worth it? confused.... Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 2Apr 04, 2014 10:22 am I think it really depends on you and your family. If you say you don't think it is worth it, then don't add the cost for it. Personally, me and my partner, love movies and watch TV shows and movies quite often. As such, we find extreme value in having a home theatre as we can effectively block off that space with doors and heavy curtains so no natural light glares in on the TV, and can then put acoustic insulation around it so the volume doesn't disturb anyone else. If you are more a casual viewer of the TV and don't necessary watch many movies, or like a theatre like atmosphere on your TV shows, then just keep to the family room as you may use that more often. You could instead of a home theatre, use it as a kid's retreat space so you both have separate areas so you don't get conflicts over who wants to watch what when. Unless your plan already has a kid's retreat. Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 3Apr 04, 2014 10:28 am What is your long-term plan? Stay in the house or sell? I have invested heavily in incorporating speakers in the ceiling and running cables in walls in a previous build and then we decided to sell. My view is that you don't get your money back on these items. If you intend to stay there, watch a lot of TV and appreciate good quality sound, then it is a worthy investment. It would certainly cost less than 20k surely. Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 6Apr 04, 2014 2:14 pm Hi marmalade, that is a good idea. Actually I think i may be able to use one area in the front of the house for 3 different purposes. Guess bedroom/ sitting area/ and then Home theater with the doors you mentioned to enclose it.. so that later down the track we we have an option. thanks Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 7Apr 04, 2014 2:17 pm http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/home_bl ... city-.html I also came across this idea when trying to decide on our alfresco size. Seems like something we would do for sure! Watching movies outside. Or have a screen available . http://www.topcelebrityhomes.com/2011/0 ... la-in.html Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 8Apr 04, 2014 4:42 pm we have a family room, a games room (kids TV room) and a theatre. family room - is used for guest and entertaining games - is for the kids area to be used as a activity area, a TV room and for when their friends come over. Theatre - is used for the adults to watch movies and TV series by the way we have four kids ( we only planned for two but got lucky!) Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 9Apr 04, 2014 5:17 pm phoenix i installed a tv in my alfresco area now the grandkids can have movie nights around the pool. not expensive just used a cheap no name brand tv mounted to the wall . my alfresco is around 6m in length x3.5 width with the built in bbq at one end. the other is the cornerless stacker doors giving lots of feeling space. i also have a media room for watching movies tv or playing games. Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 10Apr 05, 2014 8:31 am nice thanks for the feedback! all in all Home cinema room is a nice space to add especially if you know your going to utilise it. Hmmm still thinking about this one. If we don't go ahead with it. Will try and make the alfresco similar to this. I know that it won't have the same effect as a cinema room ( darker and sound proofing) that's why still thinking about it but this could be alright? We love watching movies and having movie nights so a cinema is a must. Our will be 6.15m x 5m and 38c ceilings. We will have a decent bit of space between the first row and the stage/ screen which hopefully the kids can dance etc. We will have other areas in the house if the kids want to be away from the adults. We just didn't see the need for formal rooms. Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 14Apr 05, 2014 12:01 pm I would add the room. You may or may not use it as a home cinema, but the extra room will come in very handy when the future kids are watching something on TV...or it may be your wife or indeed you, the other room gives a quiet spot to sit and read....or something. We are now retired so no kids at home, but we do have a large family room/kitchen/dining combination. The TV is in the family room. We also have a "lounge room" which is a separate room, with door that we use everyday for reading/computing. My husband watches movies quite often, I rarely do...I can close the door and read or use my laptop in peace. Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 15Apr 05, 2014 1:42 pm Its not a room that suits my lifestyle. We are quite content watching a movie on the TV in the combined Dining/Family room, we just close the blinds. I think if it suits your lifestyle then go for it - for me its just another room to furnish, power and clean - we spend much more time outside than inside, but lots of friends have theater rooms and it suits them as they watch movies a lot and spend loads of time inside, and family members like to do different things inside separate rooms of the house. Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 17Apr 05, 2014 2:54 pm Phoenix7 nice thanks for the feedback! all in all Home cinema room is a nice space to add especially if you know your going to utilise it. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ If you're intending on having a projector and screen then don't do this. You need to be able to have a dark room for the projector to be effective. An open alfresco would be no good unless it's night time and you don't have light spilling through the windows/doors of the inside of the house onto the screen. A TV would be fine. A theatre room is great if you want that true cinema experience. We love ours and use it all the time. But - they're not for everyone. If you're not sure whether you want one then don't because it's a lot of money to outlay if you're not going to use it. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 18Apr 05, 2014 2:55 pm It's my opinion that if you spent the cost of a cinema room on a wonderful set up in your family room you would get more for your money. We plan to get top of the range speakers for the lounge with the best lounge suite we can afford. As well as a quality television. I think a lot of folks don't have the cash left over to properly furnish their cinema. But everyone's different. I don't watch TV during the day so light proofing isn't an issue for me. You put a value on the things you enjoy. For me, that's reading in a quiet room, so I'm having a living area with no tv at the front of the house. If I did have a cinema room I'm a house I'd probably convert it to a gym. Good luck with your decision. Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 19Apr 05, 2014 5:00 pm We do have a sitting area at the front of the house that will be used as a guest room as well. We're thinking that this could be utilised as a room for a home cinema style experience ( surround sound and all that.) Not an easy decision. And we have a huge family room with a tv alcove of 4 meters. i think that whole space is 6 x7 approx.. hmmmm and there will be a leisure room upstairs. good old opportunity cost! hahah. I agree joannek and blueseude with both comments. lots to think about aussiemark the dimensions of your cinema room are ideal! do you have pics or a blog of your house build. Re: Home Cinema Room to add or not to add? 20Apr 11, 2014 5:17 pm thanks for the pics via email we have decided to add a home cinema. Looked at that home cinema room dimension calc. Lot's more to research. Just wondering though can wiring for a two story be done after for downstairs? i don't think so but then maybe it can?? fo go upvc window frames ensure insulation under colorbond. not just sarking, lighter color roof also not sure if you have seen this viewtopic.php?t=5823 last couple of pages… 4 110213 The last home I lived in didn't have a pool and when i went to sell it the agents were not happy, even telling me to put one in to sell the place.
