Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 27, 2014 3:25 pm For those of you who have an interior designer through the builder, at what point do you start talking to them? I've got a few hours that I can use for free and will probably pay for additional hours, but don't know if I should start talking to them now or wait for prestart. Advice appreciated. Re: Interior Designer freebies 2Mar 27, 2014 7:54 pm We spoke to ours a week or so before pre start. I guess it depends how much you already know what you want. Either way I would make sure I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted before I start with an ID. Re: Interior Designer freebies 3Mar 27, 2014 10:51 pm Thanks for that. I was hoping that I could use the ID to actually give me some ideas though, as I only have a very vague idea of what I want Re: Interior Designer freebies 4Mar 28, 2014 5:22 am I spoke to my interior designer before formalizing plans best thing I ever did. She got me really thinking about cabinetry and the way we use out house ie a spot for big platters and where you put your chopping board etc - a good one is not just about colours viewtopic.php?t=62083 Re: Interior Designer freebies 5Mar 28, 2014 3:58 pm Yeah she sounds good! We're pretty good at thinking about functionality, but lack creativity when it comes to putting things together or thinking about different ways of doing things. Re: Interior Designer freebies 6Mar 28, 2014 6:32 pm Yes, I'd recommend starting talking to them sooner rather than later. They might give you some homework to think about before prestart or get you to start thinking differently about some things you had in mind. I think the sooner you start that process the better. Plus if it's not someone you've chosen, you'll want to work out whether you click with the interior designer you've been sent to. If not, again better to know that soon so you can find someone you do like. Having said that, I'm sure you'll want time with them later too. Time with an interior designer is always going to be useful, whatever stage it happens at. I kept a running list of things I wanted to check with our builder's designer. I found that a lot of things dropped off the list before I got to talk to her, as making some decisions meant others followed on. But it meant I was always prepared if we had to see her about something else. We're also struggling a little bit with making our bar area work, so she might be able to help with that too. Re: Interior Designer freebies 8Mar 28, 2014 10:37 pm You would have to like her style if you want opinions. Our interior designer was really offering a lot of options which I didn't even know about ( such as making an overhang on the top of every window frame so curtains can be pushed right off the window etc) and keeping our style consistent. She was not opinionated about any of our colours though as she believed if you love it it will be right. So I would have a lot of pictures that you like then they can assist you to achieve the look without having your tastes clash. Ours was really good with practical things like how to fit out our WIR and why it was better to have a toilet that backs to the wall. And she told my husband he was a bit too stingy in some of his selections as the smaller things wo u lo achieve resale. She was also practical in her advice. Stuff like frost the bathroom windows heavily then you won't need to pay for a window treatment. The best advice she gave us was for the exterior. She knew what gutters and other things would go with our style. It was definitely less about colours though. I felt we were glad to have basically picked out a rough idea of what we wanted. Good luck and enjoy it. Ours was 5 hours and quite fun. Re: Interior Designer freebies 9Mar 29, 2014 12:38 am From the pictures I've seen on her website I think I would like her style so I'm not too worried on that count, and have a couple of other names in mind if it doesn't work out. It's good to know that they can make good suggestions like that though, sounds like you got a good one, will be following your build too! Re: Interior Designer freebies 10Mar 29, 2014 12:38 am Also, gutters! I've been obsessed with getting the right ones!
