Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 19, 2014 12:10 am Hi everyone Nice to meet you all. I am in the process of building my new home. We have not gone to the walk through stage but will be next week. I did a quick walk around the house and noticed the mortar has cracks in many places and in one spot you can actually pull the bricks out with the mortar. I have no idea why this would happen and very concerned that it may become an ongoing major issue. I need your help and advise as to what I should do and what you think is wrong. Photos of what I mean is below. It sounds to me as though you need to get a professional inspector to do a full inspection and report. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! No. 3 is of a construction join normally every 6m or so - they should line the bricks up a bit better than that. No. 4 the corner sill brick needs to be re-laid No. 6 - 15 same as No. 3 Note : in all instances you should see a 10mm black or grey poly strip 5-10mm back from the face of the brickwork. Those gaps are to allow for expansion and contraction as the house moves with heat, cold and moisture. Some of the others at the wall/eaves junction need to be re-laid. The chippies have knocked those during building and finishing the eaves or fascia. Stewie Re: Defects - Need your advice about Bricks and Mortar 6Mar 19, 2014 3:42 pm Thank you Stewie for your suggestion and information. Do you think it could affect the house structure? and would it be worthwhile getting an inspector our for a independent report? I am worried that the mortar problem may become an ongoing issue... I did inform the builder and the site super about it with these images. They told me that all these issues need to brought up an the walk through stage which will happen next week and that they will fix it after the walk through (next 10 business days). It this normal process? Here are the images again: 1. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ 2. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ 3. The loose bricks up against the eaves etc need to be re-laid as do the sill corner bricks. None of those will affect the structural integrity of the wall. But I would certainly point them out to the SS and ask to have it rectified ! Stewie Hi All, I engaged a tradie to install concrete retaining wall 600-800mm high over 32 meters in Victoria. Sleepers are 200*75*2000 mm installed over 17 steel posts. I… 0 3701 1 7816 All 3 items listed are defects and are of concern.
