Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 11, 2014 5:00 pm Hi, we have had our colour selection appointment, for the paint, windows, garage door etc they are fairly easy to choose but we have got stuck with bricks... As we are building in a well established area, we are thinking of a traditional facade, personally I prefer to dark brownish/reddish blended colours. I really like a Daniel Robertson "Hawthorn Tan" bricks, but we were told by the builder that they cost almost double compared to the builder's standard range. Also we have had a look at Hartlands of Boral, but it seems too orange to me. Today we went to see a few houses that used Kooyong bricks (Austral Bricks) but were really disappointed. Just wondering if anyone here can recommend a Boral or Austral brick that is proved to look good and classic(dark brownish/reddish blended colours)? Since we can't afford Daniel Robertson bricks we thought we might better get something from these two suppliers that have more affordable products. Thanks! Re: Help! brick choices 2Mar 11, 2014 6:30 pm Try the Boral Barwon brick. That's what are are using. Dark brown with flecks of black in them. That's what are are using. Dark brown with flecks of black in them. Thanks! I had a look at your building thread, the pics of the exterior look nice with Barwon bricks. I will definetely get a list of the addresses from Boral Re: Help! brick choices 4Mar 12, 2014 10:46 am Hi, We were in the same position and would have loved to have gone with a higher category brick. Since we couldn't we went with Austral Red Gum and I'm really happy. I was worried they would be too bright or orangey but they're not. I have pictures on my thread. Re: Help! brick choices 5Mar 12, 2014 12:10 pm Good luck with your choice! One of the best decisions I made was to have DR's Hawthorn Tan. Nothing came close to the look I was after, and I have not regretted my (gulp) $7K upgrade. I would not have been happy with anything else. I see them everyday and they are an integral part of my exterior with the unique blend of many colours. Love them to bits!!! Your next best bet is probably Austral Canterbury or Hawthorn from the Melbourne range or Homestead Tan from the Homestead range. But it has been a while and probably several batch changes since I built my house. It's a huge decision, and one that you really don't want to regret. You'll see your bricks every day, and you don't want to be reminded with, "I wish I had gone with the Daniel Robertson's." If you love them, then try and go with them. Bricks can't be changed later down the track like a lot of other things... Best wishes! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I have noticed that the boral bricks on offer do seem to vary from state to state. We are down on the NSW/Vic border and so I've noticed that the website seems to have different names for each state. So that's something to keep in mind when google searching or looking on the net. Which state are you in? We are in NSW but our builder is over the border in Vic so I will talk in the Vic colours! From what I've seen, I'm leaning toward either the mocha or jarrah bricks in the boral range. I think the jarrah might be a bit too red though so am leaning toward mocha. What colour roof, guttering, facia, etc are you thinking of? Also, will you have any rendering done? So much to consider! The photos you posted are abosolutely stunning and is exactly what I'm after! If it was only $7K that we needed to pay I'd be quite happy with it, but we were told by our builder that it would cost us $20K extra!! I think I will need to check with them again! With Austral Canterbury we've seen a few houses, but the colour is very bright and orange... it's just missing the dark colours to keep balanced... Re: Help! brick choices 9Mar 12, 2014 2:19 pm CountryHome Here's the two shades I mentioned above: And to compare, is this the DR hawthorn tan you are lusting after? It's good to know that I'm not the only one! I've in Vic, I'd get dark grey (close to black but not quite, forgot the name) for roof, the gutter will be the same dark colour, and I'd choose paperbark for downpipe, windows and garage door as it goes well with most red/brownish colours. For render I'd get paperbark or a slightly darker colour. Yes, that's the DR Hawthorn Tan that I like, and they will give me some addresses of another one which is called Red Blend which is a bit cheaper than Hawthorn Tan. Re: Help! brick choices 10Mar 12, 2014 2:22 pm ^^ is it woodland grey for the roof? That's the colour I'm thinking of too also looking at either paperbark or maybe surf mist for gutters etc. Still deciding on how to do it all and I think I'll look into getting wood (or wood look) for garage door and windows. It sounds like we have some similar tastes Our build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=69984 If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain. I've viewed some pictures of Boral Mocha on internet, but they all seem quite different from each other, some look really dark and some lighter ones definetely look beautiful. I wonder what's the current Mocha colour that Boral makes? Do you have some latest photos? I'm sure wood/timber will go well with Mocha. Yeah I guess if you looked up DR Hawthorn bricks here, my posts would feature quite heavily! 20K is a bit ridiculous, I'd be ringing up DR and finding out the price of 1000 bricks to give yourself a rough idea to compare with others. Unfortunately, nothing really is a good match with them, as they are just so unique Also, my bricks were some of the last in an old batch, and now going back 5 years ago, so they won't look exactly the same anyway. Are you building with Henley or a custom builder? Yes it has been 5 years the colours might look different. I've asked them to give us a list of addresses of both Hawthorn Tan and Red Blend. We are building with Hermitage a smaller builder compared to Henley, I guess Henley can get a better price because of the volume. Re: Help! brick choices 15Mar 16, 2014 9:05 pm Update: DR has moved their production to TAS and they can't really guarantee the colours...and price is very expensive, we might have to give it up as there are too many other things in the house that we will have to get too. we have been driving around to check out the houses and have narrowed down the options to: Mocha (the most popular brown colour Boral bricks in VIC, can't really go wrong) Barwon (a bit darker than Mocha, told by Boral that this is the most popular one in the area where we are building) Canterbury (we still love reddish and this one looks close, but a bit too orange and bright to me) Today I just found out there is another red one called Burwood Blue by Austral Bricks, which was discontinued a few years ago but 6 months ago it has been brought back. There are no much info or images on internet but I found a few, they look very nice. Would like to share a picture but not sure how to upload one Re: Help! brick choices 16Mar 17, 2014 7:10 am You can use tinypic to upload I believe? Otherwise if you have a smart phone or iPad, download the tapatalk ap from the ap store (I think there's a trial version that's free) and that makes it super easy to upload pics. That's what I do. I use explorer on my iPad to view the forum most of the time and then switch to tapatalk to upload pics. I'm using Tapatalk to upload pics, so easy! I really like the bricks in this photo, the pic is from a builder's website, they said the y used Burwood Blue. But today I went to see a house recently built with burwood blue the colours are a bit different. Re: Help! brick choices 18Mar 17, 2014 8:47 pm I wonted something like that and found out my front was getting rendered . I use to drive around my estate . I did ring the brick place and ask them way I saw so many variation in the way the brick looked . Sometimes they can more black in or white and the over all look can be different . They did mention to me I could pick my stack of bricks . I don't know how that would work with the builder . Re: Help! brick choices 19Mar 17, 2014 9:13 pm Yes, tapatalk is so easy! I like those bricks, but I don't know if I like how much variation there is, even within that pic. Why is it so hard?!
