Browse Forums Building A New House Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 821Feb 16, 2015 7:20 am Just a quick one as it's something I was thinking of this morning and so jotted down. Things I'm looking forward to (I think there is a thread somewhere about this) and things I'll miss when I move out. It's getting exciting as I think I see the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel!!
Things I'm looking forward to Own space! Being able to compost and have a worm farm Being able to find things and put things away TV room area Own kitchen Own fridge Ice from fridge Walking to my local bread shop My own office space Not having to be socialable when I first get up in the morning! Being able to build things My courtyard!! Vertical gardens Being able to grow food (herbs, salad veges, asian veges mostly) Fruit trees (I had some figs from my fig tree I put in a few years ago in a holiday house on the weekend. AMAZING) A landline again (occassionally I need to use it or don't want to use my mobile and although we only use VoIP it's still a landline for all intents and purposes) Added: being able to buy things! Things I'll miss Dog sitting services Not having to worry about dinner Magic Laundry (washed, dried, folded!) Not having to do dishes The short walk to/from the station Clean floors (without having me to do it!) Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 822Feb 16, 2015 7:22 am Thought I'd share in case anyone else is in the same boat as us and needs broadband when the move back in and needs a TV antenna There is a current Optus deal which is great. At the moment we can get unlimited broadband, fetch tv (includes up to 30 movies or something like that per month), 30 channels a few of which we'll watch, unlimited calls to most of the places we'd call. All for $90 per month. It's almost why wouldn't we do this! And it would mean I can get rid of the need for an antenna which I was a bit worried about (only because it was something else to worry about). I'm going to try and lock it in for early April for our place despite it not being ready by then. Well I don't think it will be ready by then and I had moved our service to my MIL's place so if I have to adopt it a bit earlier then so be it. We already pay $75 per month for our 120GB which we never reach anyway so the unlimited is a bit crazy but we get other benefits which are cool too. It's unfortunate that we'll have another phone number though. But maybe we'll be there for years to come and can just keep it? I'll have to ask if we can do local number portability although our 'exchange' for our VoIP number is far away to where we live so it confuses some people. Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 823Feb 16, 2015 8:25 am Interesting about the Optus deal. That's pretty good! We pay about 90 for unlimited without all those benefits! Ours drops out daily though (changed providers and still does it) so I'd be worried about watching something on TV and the net stopping? If you're engrossed it could be pretty frustrating! I love all those things you listed. The few things you'll miss are pretty awesome and sure come close to equalling those you're looking forward to . I mean who doesn't want a magic laundry!!!! Putting cleans clothes from the basket to the cupboards is my least likely house job of them all Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 824Feb 16, 2015 8:32 am great list...I'm the same ... but no magic laundry, meals or dishes unfortunately .. I still have to do that Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 825Feb 16, 2015 8:36 am watching something and then dropping out should be ok with the timeshifting stuff that comes with it? We use to get drop outs and would reboot the router on a daily basis (we'd do this via a timer!) I must say the magic laundry is pretty awesome. @deluded you need to move in with my MIL she's looking for things to do and wants to look after people. Drives me batty! Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 826Feb 16, 2015 8:42 am forgot to mention that I am looking forward to being able to buy things again... although we'll be broke from things like landscaping and driveways. Neither of us had satisfactory birthdays in the last 12 months as we felt like we couldn't buy anything tangible. Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 827Feb 16, 2015 8:48 am yvonneh watching something and then dropping out should be ok with the timeshifting stuff that comes with it? I must say the magic laundry is pretty awesome. @deluded you need to move in with my MIL she's looking for things to do and wants to look after people. Drives me batty! thanks Yvonneh I might consider it! .. on the subject of broadband I had plans to go to Telstra instead of Optus .. purely because I wanted better speeds. I might do away with the TV antenna altogether and stick with Internet. Oh and I agree with the buying (sort of) I've been avoiding buying anything period as there's just no room to put it anywhere. I've go to the storage facility a number of times to move some of the winter gear there and transport the summer gear in, all the clothing are either in big garbage bags or in space backs ... which don't smell all that great after storage. Hope I can find that light soon!! ... Know any good fencing company around? or are the all much of a muchness... Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 828Feb 16, 2015 9:00 am actually I do know of a good fencing company. We used Knockout fencing. Ha when I googled it I even got my review of them http://www.fencingsutherland.websyte.co ... d/contact/ Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 829Feb 16, 2015 9:11 am Grr, just typed and lost a big post! Anyway, on the TV/internet thing.... We don't really need a tv port and antenna these days do we? We didn't have one in our now-demolished house, we just had the Foxtel through a cable. We're looking at doing the same again, so we'll just need a dataport where we want each tv right? No tv ports? This whole thing confuses me so much! We basically just want free to air and Fox Sports and don't watch anything (except football) live. If we stick to the data ports and get either an IQ or TBox or whatever there, will that work? Not sure about Foxtel. So we have antenna points and data points in the two critical tv watching areas and data points for the rest. Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 831Feb 16, 2015 9:51 am Thanks yvonneh. We are still getting the one tv point as it's included in our package. I'll have to do more research on it I guess, I was just hoping for an easy answer Follow my Coral Daydream 28 build: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72384 Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 832Feb 16, 2015 10:05 am This might help http://community.foxtel.com.au/t5/Techn ... td-p/22789 Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 833Feb 16, 2015 11:40 am yvonneh We keep thinking of moving down the coast Wollongong way. Maybe one day! Yeah trying to find someone to build on our block was difficult. Custom builders yes but it was an exy build then. We would have loved to get our dream house built which was much smaller but a similar c shape courtyard based house. The problem was the build would have been around $580k to build! Tiles will provide some thermal mass. We were actually going to try a Reverse Brick Veneer house to increase the thermal mass inside the house. Having said that I've been working in offices with too much thermal mass so much so my feet almost froze as they had polished concrete floors and all hard surfaces. It is a lovely down here.. starting to get expensive though (still nowhere near as expensive as sydney). we found that the custom builders were trying to push their own designs on us and they did not want to build a single storey home. So we decided to design the house from scratch. Everything has turned out to be a bit more expensive than we thought. But i hope we will be happy with the results. do you have much subfloor space with your build? we are thinking of excavating some extra space underneath the house so that we can turn the area into an extra room or a man cave further down the line. Reverse brick veneer is interesting. Its a bit too different for me though haha. Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 834Feb 16, 2015 11:44 am TraceyWayne Abztronic, your house looks great, we're also doing bearer and joist build on a slope, are you starting a thread? Would be keen to follow Thanks Tracey! I might create a thread once we get the mortgage sorted and start with the build.. depending on how busy i get with work. I'm interested to see what your design looks like and how it fits on your slope Are you building through a project home builder? Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 835Feb 16, 2015 12:59 pm We have decent amount of subfloor space and probably could have done something but there are lots of posts/brick piers and it's just not high enough. So we'll probably just use it for storage. We lived in a house where the subfloor was converted and it was good thermal mass (stable temperature) but some spaces were very awkward. The most annoying thing was the ceiling height. Oh and the spiral staircase was too small. Re: KDR with Sekisui House: Insulation 838Feb 16, 2015 7:18 pm Wow its amazing how much difference plaster makes, that room is huge you could hold a ball in there. I am looking for feedback on them from others who have built with them. 0 13444 |
