Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 16, 2014 7:50 am Hi all, Getting close to tendering stage and only until now we realise still millions of things! One of a BIG questions: is using timber floor boards upstairs a bad idea? I understand carpet with upgraded underlay are most people' s preference. It is just we're thinking carpet can get quite dusty, etc. Wood floor board is easier to clean. That said, noise is a major concern. So, are upstairs floor boards really noisy ( as we do hate noise too). Can premium underlay do the trick? Has anyone here had experiences using timber floor upstairs? Any advice appreciated!! Re: Timber Floor board upstairs? 2Feb 16, 2014 8:34 am My friend's townhouse has timber floor boards on the first floor, certainly I can hear where they are walking to and from, and with that wood noise. If you have bedrooms downstairs that could be a problem.. Re: Timber Floor board upstairs? 3Feb 16, 2014 9:16 am We are having wooden floor boards on both our levels. With the second floor slab being concrete and no space between slab and floor boards I don't anticipate any problems. (Also, we are a shoes off household, so that will help.) http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 Re: Timber Floor board upstairs? 4Feb 16, 2014 11:52 am Yep its wood floors for us on the upstairs as well. My daughter is sensitive to dust so we thought wood will be a better fit. It funny, presently we live in SIngapore and the upper floors are always wood actually. +1 for the shoes off approach, its the done thing in Singapore and I must say it does keep the dirt out. Re: Timber Floor board upstairs? 5Feb 20, 2014 7:04 am Hi Youngstar. You can have polystyrene blocks placed between the floors. Not only will this stop the noise but will also act as a great insulator too. Its worth while looking into it if you are worried about noise. A Re: Timber Floor board upstairs? 6Feb 20, 2014 10:24 am We're using it for a different reason ... but that Hebel PowerFloor system (Google it) should have a positive effect on noise coming from a timber floor upstairs. It's probably not as cheap as having polystyrene insulation, but also not as expensive as having a house built with a concrete slab for the first-storey floor. Re: Timber Floor board upstairs? 8Mar 25, 2017 10:12 pm Resurrection of an old thread I'm getting closer to my tender appointment and I'm having the same problem of choice YoungStar had at that stage. My son is an asthmatic and I'm looking for ways to minimize the dust without slaving day and night to keep the carpet clean. All my rooms are upstairs and we will have no shoes upstairs policy. Anyone with floorboards on upeer floor here in Melbourne having any good, bad or ugly experience with it? I have a home gym at home. It weights 150KG including the weight stack. I'm a big boy, around 150KG myself. I was thinking about moving it up stairs to the second… 0 6304 Thanks for clarifying. Sorry I misunderstood your point 7 6977 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15908 |
