Browse Forums Building A New House Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 21Mar 25, 2014 7:45 pm I tend to agree with Trixee. For me the fridge closer to the main prep is better. This may be personal preference though, depending on how organised you are when you cook. I tend to get nearly everything I need out of the fridge and pantry before I start.
Having cavity sliders for the two options with fridge and larder in the corridor may not relieve "traffic jams" at high peak usage times when the kids are looking for something to eat! But of these I prefer no 2, if you rarely use the microwave for actual cooking. (Mine is only used for defrosting or heating.) And going around the space with the benchtop would, I think, add to a feeling of spaciousness in the kitchen as well as obviously more bench space. Do you know what size the larder is reduced to for the options? For me this would be the decider. Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 22Mar 25, 2014 7:51 pm Ok don't shoot me but I don't particularly like any of them it appears that apart from the kitchen island (which can get used as a bit of a drop zone especially with kids) that there isn't a lot of bench top space in the main kitchen and then you have the huge unused floor space in the larder - it just feels clunky too me .....sorry just my 2c......the only thing I could think of was moving your toilet in your ensuite up next to your shower and then making your larder longer and narrower and more of a skullery <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=62083">viewtopic.php?t=62083</a><!-- l --> Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 23Mar 25, 2014 9:17 pm I like option 2! We are having a big larder with a open WIP Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 24Mar 25, 2014 10:18 pm Thanks all for the thoughts. Trixee, the island will be our main prep area. The display has the hotplate in this area, but that didn't work for us. We hadn't considered the dishwasher door. However we had considered having a U shape kitchen, so we're not too bothered not being able to squeeze through here. I think there will be enough room anyway. I hope your plans are progressing with Ken. Have you decided on a builder yet? Dannislade - I hadn't thought about the cost saving by keeping the design as is. Something to add to our list of pro's for keeping it as is. Thanks Treeseachanger, our boy isn't old enough yet for us to consider this. I guess as he grows and potentially our family, it'll become an issue. We use the microwave a fair bit for him at the moment, so I guess we need to balance future use. The final larder would be approximate 1.3m deep, by 2.8m wide. The cavity slider is necessary to allow access without taking up room on the door arc. No shooting necessary AKB. All thoughts welcome. It's been a real balance getting the kitchen right, and the fact we're not comfortable with any one particular design is an indication of we're we are at. Whilst it lacks some practicality, we think it works well with the rest of the house/block. The larder is one space that has ended up an 'odd' space. Hopefully we can use a recess on the other side of the kitchen as a drop zone and preserve the island bench for preparation. The other option would be to steal some space from the larder and create a hallway linen cupboard. 2-cupcakes - WOW..... What a massive larder. We had considered the Bordeaux and even played around with putting the fourth bedroom on the side of the house and stretching the games room to the back of the alfresco area. Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 26Mar 26, 2014 12:00 am I just discovered the Blum test drive kitchen and have booked an appointment for next week. Maybe you might find this useful too? Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 28Mar 26, 2014 12:50 am The Blum showroom is in Ozzie park, only open during the week so not on weekends. Anyway, I went in the other day cos I was looking at different systems and got talking to the sales guy. He showed me a room which had kitchen modules on wheels, for example there was an oven stack, and a set of drawers etc. Once they have your plans they will move the modules around to mimic your kitchen layout and you can spend an hour playing in your kitchen layout, moving things around etc. You need to make an appointment though. I thought it sounded pretty awesome! Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 29Mar 26, 2014 3:58 am Thanks Trixee that sounds like a fantastic idea! <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=62083">viewtopic.php?t=62083</a><!-- l --> Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 30Mar 26, 2014 7:24 am i have a radical thoght extend side of house to under eaves creating more space as kitchen will also be extended slightly that will let you leave the kitchen design as is but along the wall where oven will be you can place a microwave tower cupboard with a microwave built in next to larder door opening with larder door have a sliding door gives much more room and keep fridge space next to larder opening as is. inside the larder have a bench and cupboardson one side and lots of shelves . i have a very large larder/pantry enough room to put a very big freezer with lots of bench space. i have pics in my thread of it my pantry is 2.5m x2.1m width also ask for power points . i have three lots. on my bench is where i have the toaster and can place things from the shelves. i found no need for a sink in the larder but others like the idea. these are just my ideas of what i would do i also had the shelves width 300mm a great suggestion given by a member on site no losing food in the back of shelves Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 31Mar 26, 2014 12:35 pm Thanks Trixee - I'll have to check them out. We were measuring all of the dimensions in our kitchen last night to get an idea. It's a little bit 'pokey' between the bench spaces! Rocky - what a great house you have. I love your pool and outlook. We'd consider extending the kitchen, but we're already just over our 'site coverage' limits. We might play around with the ensuite/toilet set up to see if we can create a more functional space. 300mm shelves sound interesting and will surely help keep control on what's hiding in the pantry. Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 32Mar 26, 2014 7:05 pm Not often these days that you get a 900 sqm block - mines not even 250! Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 33Mar 27, 2014 9:09 pm We are very lucky Alan. Mind you I'm sure it's going to be a lot of work. After much discussion and measurements, we've concluded that the island bench may be too close to the fridge and oven (900mm). We could move the island further out (1-200mm), but this will narrow the gap between the island bench and the gap between the exit to the alfresco also is only 900mm. The island bench width is also 900mm and in an ideal world, we'd widen it. So we've got another session with the builder tomorrow to see what we can do. Worst case scenario, we'll make the kitchen a U shape, giving us more bench space and options. We're leaning towards many of the suggestions on here and will probably keep the pantry as is, but incorporate a work bench, some cabinetry and a power point. Thanks for all of the feedback. Also as everyone on here suggests, check, recheck and then check again your drawings. We took the dimensions of the kitchen for granted and only noticed some of the limitations when looking to make some minor adjustments. We thought our kitchen was going to be the same dimensions as the display home, but because of our other minor changes, dimensions in other rooms have changed. We would have been disappointed to find this out at build time! Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 34Mar 27, 2014 10:49 pm Hope you work it out, it's harder than it seems it should be, isn't it? Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 35Mar 27, 2014 11:08 pm It's probably just a case of making it harder than it needs to be. But when your spending so much money, you just want to make sure you make the best decision possible. I thought all of our dramas and decisions were over after dealing with our site costs. Good luck at Blum..... And best of luck choosing a builder, if you haven't already. Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 36Mar 28, 2014 1:11 pm for me the larder would be far too much empty space. I would choose the original design with fridge recess. Behind the fridge recess I would have the wall from the hallway towards the middle, narrowing the larder. On the hallway side I would want storage cabinets. Re: KD and rebuild - Perth Eastern suburbs - Kitchen Layout? 37Mar 28, 2014 11:42 pm Thanks Evelin. I like the idea of more storage. Contracts signed. Pre start on April 11, with electrical appointment on Wednesday. Fingers crossed for a smooth build! Re: KDRB - Dale Alcock -Perth Eastern suburbs - Contracts Si 38Mar 29, 2014 12:13 am Exciting! Have you got your colours worked out? Re: KDRB - Dale Alcock -Perth Eastern suburbs - Contracts Si 39Mar 29, 2014 12:48 am External only, which I've posted on here. We're going to base inside colours off our main flooring choice. At this stage we're leaning towards wood look tiles, with white/light grey porcelain a close second. We're somewhat limited with flooring options with a Labrador. My wife loves the French provincial theme, so no doubt we'll try to incorporate some aspects into the home. We're liking greys for walls and then highlight colours through furniture/dressing. Re: KDRB - Dale Alcock -Perth Eastern suburbs - Contracts Si 40Apr 10, 2014 10:20 pm It's taken a while to happen, but we're heading to pre start tomorrow. We did our electrical last week along with smart wiring. We spent about 5.5k including ten down lights to our raked ceilings, a fan to the alfresco, a couple of extra data points, a bunch of additional power points, a bunch of conduits for fans and future down lights. We had no choice with raked ceiling areas. We also applied for our finance during the week which is looking positive. We're still unsure on a few things heading into tomorrow but we're hoping we can be somewhat guided by the consultant. We're no clearer on kitchen design, but leaning towards keeping the original layout. We're still considering wood look tiles vs rectified white/grey 600mm tiles. This will have some impact on colour selections for the kitchen. We're also weighing up liquid limestone vs pavers for the driveway and pavers, liquid limestone and decking for the alfresco. I guess when we have to make a decision we will. Last year I had a gas leak at my house. 3 days later, I have about 1 sqm of my exposed aggregate paving broken up. I am not sure how to go about getting it repaired… 0 10377 After some ideas on making our patio kid friendly . Currently we have exposed aggregate.
