Browse Forums Building A New House Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 7May 17, 2008 9:35 pm Not sure - maybe I was a bit ripped off. There were two factors though - one was that it was only a laundry and entry and the other was that it was on a hardwood floor so underlay had to be added. I'm counting on having about 80sqm laid as well so I hope you're right. Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 8May 17, 2008 9:49 pm I hope it doesn't cost that much.
Can anyone share their experiences with tiling... we are going to be doing about 80sqm, just wondering who could you recommend to do the work, how much did it cost for some of you to tile similar areas. Regards, Ratter Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 10May 18, 2008 4:12 pm penny73 We cant go to look at the tiles til the day we choose them with National Tiles so I was planning to visit one of their stores as they know what the standard and upgrades are so I can have a look there. Just wondering anyone who has built with PD what did they charge you to upgrade your tiles? How many levels of upgrade are there? Cheers Hi Penny73, We are building with PD Lifestyle. We were quoted for Cat 1 Builders Range for all the tiled areas so we looked at Cat 1 tiles. We had about 6 white tiles to choose from in Cat 1 at no extra cost........However all the coloured Cat 1, yes Cat 1!!, were porcelain tiles so they 'stung' us an additional labour charge of $10 per square to lay, total extra labour charge for Cat 1 tiles being $1100!! Not happy, spoke to CSR but good ol Glenn in tenders could not be budged. Oh well it's only money right?...right? I suggested PD make their porcelain tile Cat 2 if they are going to sting people like that. So good luck......we have had a good journey with PD so far...... Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 11May 18, 2008 4:59 pm So all the standard tiles are light coloured!!! We want the tiles in the PD chocolate touch on style finder. I dont want porcelain tiles too hard to keep clean with my kids.
I am building the NEwstead 27 so not a huge home. I am off to National tiles in Sunshine tomorrow. I was prepared to upgrade the tiles at a cost. It was one area I didnt mind spending a bit of money. I would get it done after the build. We are already getting the carpet, cooling and downlights done after. I have a few concerns. Getting a tiler (I know they are hard to pin down) and also I have read that you need to make sure the skirting boards are only tacked on? With all the stuff going on part of me thinks it will just be simpler to let PD do it. Also they have to do a good job as I will be getting Kev to inspect pre handover. Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 12May 18, 2008 5:09 pm It's better to leave the skirting boards off or tack them on for installing floorboards (although not essential) but for tiles I don't believe it's necesary. Most tiles I see laid are done after the skirting boards are installed and I don't think it looks any worse - in fact I think the end result looks better. I'm pretty sure PD would lay the tiles after the skirting boards are on. Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 14May 18, 2008 8:41 pm We are building with PD and the cost of the tile upgrades was significant. As an example we put mosiac tiles in the niches in our bathrooms, on average the upgrade was $160 per niche. Our extra tiles cost over $9000.
The workmanship has not been great. Check every detail of your order because ours was wrong and we have to accept it. A grout colour was but down as 54 instead on 64 and now we have green grout instead of brown!!! Below are some pictures of the poor workmanship http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k288/xoxsurrenderxox/DSCF0289.jpg http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k288/xoxsurrenderxox/DSCF0289.jpg http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k288/xoxsurrenderxox/DSCF0290.jpg Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 15May 19, 2008 10:07 am The tiles on our floor are Cat 1and they are a milk chocolate colour, we had heaps to choose from at national tiles We spent $800 on upgrades, that was for pebbles in ensuite and main bathroom and mosaics in the kitchen...... Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 16May 19, 2008 10:11 am I'm a bit confused here...
So cat 1 tiles in Lifestyle homes ONLY include white tiles??? No colour..that seems strange...I don't care if the tiles are porcelain...I just wanted a few neutral colours to choose from.. But Rellie it seems you got to choose from browns so I wonder if it is the same for Lifestyle homes, it seems we get the raw deal with most of our selections...Boral bricks and the like My karma ran over your dogma Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 17May 19, 2008 10:25 am Our bathroom tiles are all Lifestyle Cat 1.

Our living area was a small upgrade - they didnt have the tile at the port melb showroom, we found it at another national tiles. Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 18May 19, 2008 12:39 pm OOh I am wondering if that is the sample tile I just brought home vanderlay!! Can you tell me the code or the name. I will try and take a pic of mine later.
I found the range to be better than I expected. I was particularly pleased that they do many of the tiles in a larger size which is what we wanted. I think I will be able to choose something from the standard range with a few "feature" tiles (such as pebble) upgrades. Anderson - sorry to hear you have so much trouble. I would have thought if the mistake was theirs they would have to correct it?? Hopefully Kevin the wonder inspector will be able to save me the same stress. Do like your tiles though!! Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 19May 19, 2008 1:04 pm Fewf!! Thanks Vanderlay - I wasn't keen on the idea of all white tiles in the bathoom - I love your tiles in both the bathroom and on your floors - great choice!
On a side note - Love your kitchen too My karma ran over your dogma Re: PD tile upgrades anyone?? 20May 19, 2008 5:56 pm We're building with PD and upgraded to the Category 3 range of tiles - cost us $1500 to upgrade.
We tried to be prepared for our appointment so I rang National Tiles about 2 weeks prior and asked them to send me samples of all the standard (category 1) tiles that were a chocolate or coffee color. They did and we found the perfect tile! We went to our appointment thinking we'd have it sorted in no time only to discover the tile we wanted had been discontinued in the last week. Joy. In the end we upgraded and chose a color called Urban Earth, it's like a latte color and the good news is it looks great. Slab down mid Jan - now at fix stage. Looking for advice on whether this variation in tile colour is acceptable. The large tile on the left was used in my main bathroom renovation 1 year ago.
