Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 15, 2014 11:17 am Hi a couple of quick questions! 1. What are peoples thoughts re skirtings and cornices? We will have some detail in our cornices so is it best to keep skirtings plain or match with a little detail also? 2. We are considering spotted gum flooring but some pictures I've seen I really don't like them where as others are stunning. Of course spotted gum is very variable with the colours but does it also depend on who you source them from i.e Boral or else where? I understand that there is NSW and QLD species also, just not sure if we should take the risk Thanks! Re: Rule of thumb skirtings/cornices? Also floorboard select 2Feb 06, 2014 8:34 am Hi, Our cornices in our home are plain Cove (standard - I don't think we had the option of changing them, but I didn't ask). Our skirting has some detail (NSW Colonial) and we love it. Ours don't match, but I think it still looks great. Spotted Gum flooring is spectacular. I have spent ages researching it for our floors, and whilst I know there is a difference between QLD and NSW Spotted Gum, I keep reading conflicting advice about which is which. Anyhow, we have decided to go with Big River Spotted Gum Armourfloor - engineered flooring. The variations are lovely, the standard size boards (138mm) are wider than most companies (IMO, the timber variations make the flooring look busy, and the wider boards tone down the look a little). These boards are a little more expensive as well, but the ply layers are all solid hardwood, (not pine or rubberwood which is softer, and provides less stability), and they only use the best quality veneer for the top/exposed layer (this means that the flooring doesn't come in different grades like the Boral Silkwood). Also, they come in pre-finished or raw. http://www.bigrivertimbers.com.au/dynam ... =1&sub_id= If you want to see these floors, I would suggest having a look at the following websites: http://www.bjtf.com.au/photo-gallery Scroll down to the Big River Spotted Gum http://www.dalealcock.com.au/New-Homes/Browse/?show_all Check out the following homes: Archipelago I Eden Goulburn (I think this is spotted gum) Kayana Long Island (again, I think this is spotted gum) Marrakech Stoneleigh I have also looked at the Australian Select Timbers - Barrington Range in Spotted Gum, and these are nice as well - I have seen these laid on a flooring showroom floor, I just couldn't find all that much information on them. http://www.asttimbers.com.au/categories/Barrington/ My suggestion is, do as much research as you can. Do as many Google image searches as you can for your chosen flooring/manufacturer, and then try and see the samples in real life, in as many different stores as you can. Spotted Gum varies so much, and is one of the more expensive flooring options, so you want to make sure you are making the right decision. Good luck I already have the doors and architraves installed as pictured. My question is which size n type of skirting would go with the architraves?
