Re: Information on Slab Design 3Feb 02, 2014 12:58 pm Hi akapacker, This is very useful information, particularly the AS document! I'm just a little worried for you that there might be copyright issues here with that last one. But, while we can, we'll have a good read! I was particularly interested to see that the Australian Standard says: 5.5.3 (a) Surface drainage of allotments for reactive sites for both footings and slabs shall be considered in the design of the footing system..." I doubt this happens very often. Re: Information on Slab Design 4Feb 02, 2014 4:36 pm I am not a structural engineer so it would not be within my expertise to comment on slab design however commenting on whether builder is following documented engineering design and specification and or AS 2870 is. Over the last decade I have documented in my reports numerous instances where builder just has not followed approved drawings. Builders flood foundations of homes on highly reactive sites or mess up surface drainage then when home is damaged and cracks appear then they attempt to pass it off as "normal and natural shrinkage" or blame the owner. In part 3.1- Site preparation of the BCa there is an explanatory note which says: "1. The BCA does not require the installation of drainage systems." ????!!!! What does this mean? Re: Information on Slab Design 6Feb 03, 2014 6:24 am Hi Liliana As 2870 and AS 3500 Plumbing and drainage are adopted in BCA by reference. In order of hierarchy BCA is above Australian standards but in many cases it simply defers to them. Even though BCA does not require drainage, local authorities do, so you have legal point of discharge from the council which requires that drainage is directed to it.
