Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Floor Plan - What's the best to do with wall at Family A 21Feb 10, 2014 11:14 pm There's a 21c high (1.120m length) plastered wall connected to another wall which is up to the ceiling (approx. 0.600m length) at the Family area. Any suggestions if we should raise this 21c wall all the way up to the ceiling or just delete it and the adjoining wall to it? Raising it will create a semi-enclosed family area while deleting it will obviously create a more open plan living. Appreciate your insights. Re: Floor Plan Feedbacks & Suggestions Please 23Feb 13, 2014 9:31 pm No wall. The wall looks odd IMO. You could still put a nice console or buffet in that little area to help separate the space. Definitely no wall. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Floor Plan Feedbacks & Suggestions Please 24Feb 13, 2014 9:34 pm My vote is wall. The section behind the wall (where you have put a little cabinet) you could make a "drop zone" - so you each get a cupboard for your work bag etc (so it doesn't all get dumped on the kitchen bench) - and you could also set it up as a charging station for your mobiles/ ipad etc. I think with a wall is more functional. I also don't like the "floating" couch that sticks out from behind the bend. Alternatively (with the wall) you could add kitchen bench/ cupboard to that entire L shape - giving you more kitchen space. Unless you want to see the TV from the kitchen.... then it is better to have no wall. Re: Floor Plan Feedbacks & Suggestions Please 25Feb 13, 2014 9:35 pm I still find the lounge room really quite awkward with or without a wall. I think if it was my house I would swap the living area for the dining area. That way you'd have a neat little dining table to wall around to get to the hallway and you'd have a decent space for a couch and tv against the windows probably (not ideal still I know).... Edit: I think I came across a bit harsh and wanted to explain. It's a lovely open plan space but I just feel there must be a better way to lay things out to avoid the living area feeling cramped and like a thoroughfare. There seems to be a fair bit of dead space and it makes me think there must be some way of getting a more fluid/functional layout from this space. The two main areas of dead space seem to me to be in that little nook and around the dining table... but I'll be blower if I can figure out how to rearrange things to make best use of it all. :s Anyhoo, hope I've not offended anyone, certainly I'm sure we all have the same concerns about our own houses. Re: Floor Plan Feedbacks & Suggestions Please 26Feb 13, 2014 10:29 pm I think if you're concerned about the extra space in front of the dining table you could increase the alfresco..... creating a "nook" where the TV is (so it is framed by the wall). If you need a play bit for kids (in the future) you could leave as it is - and push dining table towards the sliding door and set up a little play area in front of the kitchen underneath the window. Re: Floor Plan Feedbacks & Suggestions Please 27Feb 13, 2014 10:32 pm Another (totally random) thing to consider is if you celebrate Christmas and have a Christmas tree... where will you put it? (and also put a power point in that area) Re: Floor Plan Feedbacks & Suggestions Please 28Feb 13, 2014 11:04 pm Thanks for your feedbacks EmyN and joyfulbuilder! They are both appreciated. Thanks to sketchup we can make an informed decision rather than imagining how it will look like. Yes, each layout has its fair share of + and -. At the end of the day, this area is just one part of the entire house. We were able to satisfy our requirements in the other areas anyway. It's a bit of a bummer really that the living area layout is like this. Hey EmyN - I think you haven't offended anyone.
