With my soffit's, I noticed that there are long holes/gaps on the boards. What is this for? Is it for ventilation? It is something I never noticed on houses until now. Is it a common thing to have?

Whirlybirds suck the hot air out from up the top hopefully to be replaced by cooler air from outside via these vents. At least that's my understanding!
