Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 13, 2008 10:50 pm Drove by site yesterday to see how many bricks have been left and much to our dismay nearly all of those which were left last thursday (about 3.5 pallets) have now been removed only about 30 bricks are now left left! We wanted to use these later.
Were we entitled to those unused full pallets or does the builder get to return them? Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 2May 14, 2008 5:55 am I was allowed to keep all 758 of my unused bricks. But I did have to request that leftover materials be kept on site for my later use. Had I not asked, they would've been removed at the site clean.
I also have some leftover carpet, paint, roof tiles and I think some floor & wall tiles. The bricks have already come in handy as the builder needs to come back and re-do/finish some bricking prior to handover. Received keys to my new home on 16/5/08 Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 3May 14, 2008 7:21 am I think it depends on your contract?
If your contract involves the builder buying the materials, and completing the job for a fixed price, I would say the builder probably owns them. If you buy materials, and the builder removes them from site, this is theft. Simon Building an architect designed home out of Insulated Concrete Forms on acreage in semi-rural SE Melbourne. We had the issue that the clean up team took them when we still had brickwork to be done to the house, so they had to bring in more. If the brickies are blending the bricks properly there shouldn't really be any "unopened" pallets. Our brickies blended our bricks from all of the delivered pallets to avoid any patchy areas. When they delivered the extras, we were asked to pile up those we wanted to keep at the rear of the house (we stacked them against the rear wall so that they wouldn't get taken by the bobcat). Ray. Second Time 'Round leftover bricks 5May 14, 2008 8:49 am are you sure the builder took them?
We had leftover bricks at our last build. Had stacked them nicely next to the house. Arrived one day to discover a kid in the next street carting them home. His family had moved in b4 us and they were making a path to THEIR shed with our leftover bricks! grrr I can only assume either they figured we wouldn't go off at a kid taking them or we arrived after the parents had made their trip. Just a quick tip for you all. Not a good idea to leave brick stacks against anything on a long term basis.. we did this and found lots of creepy crawlies living between the bricks and the house.. Now they are stacked away from the wall at a single thickness, now air can get all round and no nastys live in them Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 7May 14, 2008 11:31 am Just went through the process of stacking bricks - According to the contract (in our case) the builder owns any left over items, however speaking to our SS he said that left overs were going to be dumped.
I told him I wanted to move them and stack them, and as far as he was concerned that was great - less for the bobcat man to do! Talk to the SS. If he says it's cool, you are all set. Did you count it one by one? Hehe As others have said just ask otherwise I think they just dump it anyway. We asked to keep our leftovers (about 1.5 pallets) and the SS said it was fine. But one day some man wandered onto our lot and started inspecting it. I think he thought nobody was home and was planning to nick them. Lucky my sis scared him off! Hehe [sneakersss] Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 9May 14, 2008 4:51 pm YSSIM Colleen I was allowed to keep all 758 of my unused bricks. Did you count it one by one? Hehe Not quite. I went up one night to start moving them out of the builder's way and after moving 40 bricks and realising I hadn't made even a slight impact on the pile that needed moving, I did a quick count of how many were in one column on a pellet and then multiplied that with how many columns I had... and then thought, okay at the rate I'm moving them, I should be finished by Christmas Luckily I have a sister who has plenty of kids (ages 17, 15, 13 and 9) so when they came to visit one weekend we all spent an hour in a production line and we moved the bricks quickly. If they hadn't helped me, I'd probably still be moving bricks! Received keys to my new home on 16/5/08 Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 10May 14, 2008 5:21 pm I kind of assumed we would get to keep the leftover bricks too, we are paying for them after all (albeit through the building contract). And readings on this forum led me to believe that it's what most people do.
Ha, needless to say I was not very happy when I read the contract & it stated that they are in fact the property of the builder. Sounds like there is still hope though, we'll do as some of you had done - ask to keep any left overs. Hubby wants to keep any dirt they have in excess from the earthworks as well. Same as for any trees they have to knock down, we'll chop em up for firewood. I have to laugh as it reminds me of our wedding, the decorator said we could keep some of the stuff (glasses, decorations etc as we had paid for it) but it was all cleaned out before we got there the next morning - not sure weather it was by the decorator or the hotel staff, ahh well! Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 11May 14, 2008 9:13 pm Sorry to hear about the bricks going.
We asked our S/S when the brickies were still on-site, he said that we should stack what we want in the back corner against the fence and he'd know what needs to stay. Unfortunately there are only about 4 roof tiles left...talk about cutting it fine!!!! Site & internal clean will be this week, so we'll be making sure that it's still there this weekend...just in case. Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 12May 14, 2008 9:30 pm same as Nicola, SS told us to put them to the side and they would stay. Ended up with about 1.5 pallets.
we also put with them the roof tiles and the cutout pieces of cstone. CSC said that we should contact SS about this issue. We are able to keep it for the future use. Great news!
-------------------------------- almost lock up stage!!! Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 14Sep 30, 2008 1:48 pm I would not be suprised to learn that bricks are not that expensive (for the builder) to buy in the first place
It would probally not be worthwhile taking bricks back to the yard unless there where more than 4 pallets or so. You have to remember that fuel, big trucks, forklifts and labour all cost lots of money. In fact its probally cheaper to dump them Down the road from us, they dug up a paved road, dumped the old pavers into a dump truck, and brought in identical ones, on pallets to relay after they had finished filling in the hole they dug. We ended up with 12 pallets of them, plus 1 of the normal ones ( about 5,200 bricks, and an equal amount of $$$!!!! ) We were thrilled, as we want some brick retaining walls, and a brick front fence, and it's all from the same batch now! Take the $$$ and buy some necessary things. Isn't it good?
I have some ideals - use it to build the mail box stand, small garden area. What else.... Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 17Sep 30, 2008 9:37 pm Read your building contract, but we had this argument with our builder as we had paid for our bricks as part of our lump sum contract. We found the supervisor trying to take our left over bricks and we found out later he was taking excess bricks from all the sites and was in the middle of owner building a house using free bricks.
We picked him up on it and he apologised prefusely and we got the bricks back that he had taken and nothing more was said he new we now had information on him. Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 19Oct 02, 2008 7:46 pm we have an agreement in our contract to keep leftover bricks and any leftover tiles( ceramic)
But originally it did say on the contract that any leftover items were the builders. Re: Who is entitled to leftover bricks? 20Oct 03, 2008 10:29 pm Any left over materials are the builders property but they should leave you with some spare roof tiles ect. Usually if you ask you can have most left over materials because most times it will just end up being thrown out.
You only have to ask That's a fantastic result!
