My father in law, having bought a house here after moving from Germany, thought it a bit fancy & unusual ('cos they don't/didn't really fit cornices to your average house in Germany), but then when he did a bit of work on the house he realised why; it's just a way to not need any care when fitting and joining-up the ceilings & walls. Yeah, it's just the quick and sloppy way of doing it. And it still cracks! Most likely poor foam installation and render installation, Joint covered with render, foam could be sitting on flashing.
