Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 2May 13, 2008 1:07 pm I haven't had an inspection (yet), but I did make enquiries with Archicentre and they offer various inspections at different stages of construction. I also found this guy whilst Googling one night, but I don't know anymore about him than what his website details. Seems he's been in the media too, but I've not heard of him previously.

After 4 years - we're in! Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 4May 13, 2008 2:24 pm I've used Howard and found him to be useful. I think Allan had some issues though. A lot of the builders in Sydney know Howard and are probably more likely to respond to his report than some building consultant they've never heard of who produces a 70 page report of mostly irrelevant issues. Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 5May 13, 2008 3:27 pm Hang on, just want to clarify, I don't mean to say that he is not good or something.
What happened is, he didn't pick up 2 major leaks in the roof (I picked that up myself), which caused us a lot of grief. Having said that, he did pick up a few other issues such as floor lipping, air con pipes not sealed properly...etc. May be it's just that we are unlucky, I believe someone might have a better experience with him. Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 6May 13, 2008 3:47 pm we are thinking of using Tyrrells Property inspections. They do Masterton and Eden Brae. They sound pretty good on the phone and does not require paperwork. I gave the buildingcentre.com a call as well but it costs more, around $880 for each inspection plus $55/half hour after 1.5 hours plus you have to fill in a couple of forms beforehand! Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 7May 13, 2008 3:53 pm that's almost double the price of others!
well if they can pick up a few major issues that would be sufficient to justify the cost! Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 8May 13, 2008 3:57 pm I have an idea, for those of you who are building in Sydney and need an inspection, why don't you send an invite and we all come as your "friends" to help and probably have a BBQ in the park near by ....
No, on second thought, to be safe, you should still get an inspection done by an qualified inspector first, then we talk about this extra "amateur" inspection... I wouldn't use Tyrells as we're building with EB & seems to me Tyrells probably know what "side their bread is buttered", if you know what I mean I think I'll give Howard a go, particularly if he has reputation in teh building trade. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 10May 13, 2008 5:55 pm I'm building with Eden Brae as well and I haven't seen any sign that Tyrell's have been involved at all. As far as I can see, the only QA has been carried out by Howard and me. Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 11Aug 01, 2008 10:32 am Just wanted to bring up this topic again, to see if anyone new has any other suggestions.
We are thinking of getting our own independent inspection and really would like to use someone via word of mouth (so to speak). Anyone with any good recommendations would be great. THANKS in advance. I recon Alan would make a perfect inspector (based on his blog). Have you thought of having a 2nd job? - devank Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 14Aug 02, 2008 2:53 pm ahuang Hang on, just want to clarify, I don't mean to say that he is not good or something. Hi Allan, did you get a comprehensive report from Howard? Was it pretty detailed? Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 15Aug 02, 2008 3:39 pm I second that, I think ahuang should come to all our houses and have a look. He can video tape and take photos all the mistakes!
We are almost near the first inspection stage and still cannot decide who we should get for independent inspection. Since we are not building with Eden Brae, we are hoping Tyrells would not hold back during the inspection- if you get what I mean. Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 16Aug 03, 2008 8:55 pm I've been thinking about this, as I really want to get someone organised pretty soon......when we sold our old place last year, there was a couple of building inspections done, and one inparticular stuck in my mind. He was a nice enough guy, but gee he was particular (which a seller doesn't really want, but as a new home builder, bring it on! ) Do you think for the life of me I can remember him...nope
Soooooo I'm going to ring the Real Estate (we have used them several times and we know the principal) to find out who he is. Can't guarantee he'll be good, but another option. Still not in. Don't ask!? Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 18Aug 04, 2008 12:27 pm Thanks everyone for thinking, I've got to find someone soon...
Ahuang, on your experience would you recommend the person you used??? Would you use him again??? Thanks for your imput... I'm sure we are already driving our foreman mad with our little comments about things... so imagine how he'll react when we tell him about our own inspection... Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 19Aug 04, 2008 6:04 pm Hi guys,
Spoke with R/E agent today and he was out of office...anyway I have a name, and he is going to get phone/contact details for me tomorrow (Tue). Told he what I was wanting to do, and he said he would think this guy is best for the job, very particular, and they dread it when a potential buyer uses him! Name is Sean O'Connell (will check spelling), a local Southie I think, but would prob travel Sydney wide. Here's hoping we will have our own Kevin! Bel Still not in. Don't ask!? Re: Sydney equivalent of "Kevin" - Building Inspectors 20Aug 04, 2008 7:57 pm Ok, Real Estate agent who calls earlier than expected.....
The guys name is Sean O'Connell and his company is Doric Property Inspections. I have left a message for him tonight and once I've spoken with him, will advise further. Ph: 95791244.
