Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 04, 2013 7:19 pm I've received a couple of quotes from different builders to build a new home and I've asked them to include provisional costs for any items not part of their standard inclusions to help me understand the cost to build the home to turnkey (have I used that expression correctly? ). And I've noticed that some of the estimates are extremely different. The main one is for window coverings/drapes. One company has said to allow $4000 for "window coverings" and the other company has said to allow $12000 for "drapes". So my questions are - are drapes and window coverings the same thing? And - how much is a more realistic allowance? Thanks Our build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=69984 If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain. Re: Quote for drapes/window covering allowance? 2Dec 05, 2013 9:17 pm Any allowance for window coverings is going to depend on the size of the house (how many windows need covering) and what type of window coverings you're after. The costs vary immensely. We could build the same house & I could spend $15000 on mine & you could spend $5000 on yours. It all depends what you get. Our house has 5 different types of window coverings - plantation shutters, wooden venetians, roman blinds, curtains & roller blinds. In any case I think $4000 is on the low side, even for a small single story. A single story house I think you'd be looking at anywhere from $7K + - again it depends on what you want, I'd imagine people have done it for less. You could easily blow the $4K just on plantation shutters for one window. I don't think the $12000 is unreasonable. P.S. Drapes are usually just curtains, but they may be using the term to mean window coverings.
