Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 02, 2013 12:44 pm Hello, I am flicking between builders to select one to build my home. Rawson prides themselves as quality builders, and thus their price isn't the cheapest in the market. Can anybody comment on this, especially if you have experience with them? This BLOG shows some structural details, do they look average? Below? Above? http://buildingwithrawson.blogspot.com.au/ THANKS HEAPS Re: Rawson Homes - Quality ? 2Dec 02, 2013 1:03 pm Quote: Hello, I am flicking between builders to select one to build my home. I would actually state that they are very competitive and I would go as far as saying that for the house that we have received and the final cost to complete would be cheap compared to many other project builders. We have been in our Rawson home for just under 5 months and are happy with the build and the home that we have and I would recommend people to build with Rawson. Please have a look at my blog, I have blogged the whole process from start to finish and have blogged the ups and the downs. I think you will find negatives and positives with every builder, but I am very happy with our choice. No builder is perfect, and everyone's experience will be different even with the same builder. Goodluck! Researching a build in South Australia from Sydney. Re: Rawson Homes - Quality ? 4Dec 02, 2013 1:39 pm This is just personal opinion based on renting a house built by Rawson - There are a lot of small quaility issues that are due to poor workmanship. The walls in the entry hallway are not square, the bulkhead above the kitchen cupboards is higher at one end, the fridge space is 30mm wider at the top, there are a LOT of chipped bricks, the drainage for the airconditioner is very poor, it drips into the roof space and runs out under the fascia which then drips onto the garage roof loudly. There are numerous paint and plaster defects that were not rectified, a number of tiles in the main living area are missing grout and are not level, the bathroom benches are covered in silicone and the false backs (service covers) of the bathroom sinks do not fit at all. All small things but would require attention if it were our house as it makes our OCD flare up. This BLOG shows some structural details, do they look average? Below? Above? http://buildingwithrawson.blogspot.com.au/ THANKS HEAPS My 2c...If Rawson have a house you love, pick Rawson. You will be no worse off. Don't pick them on the line 'Rawson prides themselves as quality builders'. For evey good Rawson story there is a bad, the same as Eden Brae or McDonald Jones etc. We too were told 'Rawson prides themselves as quality builders' and this is my main gripe with them. Maybe when they were small they were, but I can't see it - maybe because they're so busy but I think they're just falling into the 'just another big builder' bucket. If you want to PM me I can talk more about our Rawson build. Long story short is no they're not a better quality builder. They're not worse either. I feel they're no different to Eden Brae or McDonald Jones quality (2 friends have built with them). It depends on the tradies you're given during the build, not the sales pitch. We have had issues with our bricks and other upgraded items - we are not buiding a 'standard inclusions' house. We have over 120k of upgrades and we have found the quality to be honest is not great, its standard. Look at where you're building and what you want from them - standard inclusions, upgrades or extra items like a pool etc. Pick the builder that ticks all your boxes. Re: Rawson Homes - Quality ? 6Dec 02, 2013 3:07 pm I intend to build with Rawson and have spoken to an experienced independant inspector about them who basically said they were in their top 5. This seemed to focus more on getting items up to BCA than anything else though. This does give me some confidence but as mentioned above I would not expect any volume builder to give you a truly top notch finish. The main reason is that you are basically only getting the trades assigned and trades willing to work for the rates they offer - some will take pride in their work, others will not. Some will feel they are getting paid resonably for their experience others won't. Some will work only for one builder others will likely work for a number of builders be they volume or custom, etc etc etc. If you had a direct connection with the trades you might be able to have greater control of the finish quality but to go with any company thinking you're going to get a better job because of it - I'm not sure that really exists - maybe a little easier with a custom builder but even they're likely to insist on their own tradies too. In terms of the price compared to other builders - I really do find them quite reasonable with the standard level of inclusions - on last calculation we were under $1100sqm. Best of luck with your search for builder - its no easy task. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Rawson Homes - Quality ? 7Dec 02, 2013 3:13 pm Jen1977 Quote: Hello, I am flicking between builders to select one to build my home. Building getting "older" quickly?
