Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 26, 2013 10:40 am Our brickwork is almost done and our roof will hopefully be next. December is almost here and I wondered if tradesmen stopped working over the Chrisymas period. Do offices close for a few weeks and everyone downs tools or do they keep going just having the public holidays off? Thanks Re: Doses building usually stop or slow down over Christmas? 3Nov 26, 2013 11:04 am yes, our builder shuts down for 3 weeks Re: Doses building usually stop or slow down over Christmas? 4Nov 26, 2013 11:09 am Often they are closed from just before Christmas through to February, unfortunately. Its the one time of year that everyone can take time off and not worry about losing jobs to competitors etc. Having said that if someone if running behind or after extra cash you will sometimes see some work being done <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=62083">viewtopic.php?t=62083</a><!-- l --> Re: Doses building usually stop or slow down over Christmas? 6Nov 26, 2013 12:16 pm I work in the construction industry for a commercial company. Most of the offices will be shut from 20th Dec 2013 through to 12th jan 2014. The major reason apart from giving us all holidays is mainly a safety issue. A lot more people will be around for holidays (tourists etc) and it’s actually safer for workers and the public that works shuts down during the busiest period especially in high density areas such as cities to avoid any accidents In saying that you may find some people will still end up coming back earlier than expected especially if they have a lot of back log work to get through. It amazes me in this day and age a whole industry shuts down for 5 weeks! The final section of roof was completed today. They seemed to think their tiler will work through the break. I guess it makes sense but I hope they start again before February. Re: Doses building usually stop or slow down over Christmas? 10Nov 26, 2013 9:41 pm Most small businesses I know go back around the 7th mainly because we they can't afford to take more time off - cash flow wise the overheads keep coming <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=62083">viewtopic.php?t=62083</a><!-- l --> Re: Doses building usually stop or slow down over Christmas? 11Nov 27, 2013 10:47 am Our builder told us their office will be closed from 20 December to 6 January and that it's up to the trades when they decide to return to work. They expected some might take an extra week, to 13 January. We have our cabinetry work booked in for 15 January, which I think will be the first work after the break. Where I work closes for 20th to 6th, with 2-3 weeks being standard for offices. Trades vary depending on what the trade is, if they can work, if they are behind on jobs and want to catch up and if they can survive that long without working since most subbies don't get paid when they don't work. Such a shame for all of us since it means our houses stop progressing, especially if you are really close to handover, as we are, because if they didn't close we could move in by New Years, but not until end of January with the close. Oh well, just be happy if you get trades who want to work and not stop for so long! I certainly don't envy the tradesmen & tradeswomen who're forced to take their holidays at the absolute most annoying time to take holidays! Not sure who you're building with, but I moved in recently to a 11month scheduled, 8 month actual build on the South coast/Illawarra NSW 3 5901 I think you are getting different numbers because they all just based them on "other jobs" even though each job is unique.
