Hi Guys,
I'm looking to get some information on past experiences people have had with building on compacted fill.
Essentially i'm looking to build on a sloping block which would require cut and fill. Now essentially the block is located near the foot of a hill in once very productive farm land, the land is great for farming but not so great for building on. The soil report came back not so good. Clayey silt down to roughly a metre before hitting a firm silty clay.
Essentially those of you familiar with the Drouin area in Vic or live in generally hilly areas now that its common practice to cut into the land build it up and throw a few retaining walls around and hey presto here is your house. I however am new to the area and wanted to get some information on building on compacted fill.
The area we will be filling is about 1.6m at its worst. Over the slope of the block the average depth is probably around 1m. We intend to get the fill compacted to compaction level 1 (correct me if im wrong) to build a house on. So my question is. If compact the fill what benefits are foreseeable in terms of slab costs?
If we don't compact the fill it may be a case of screw piles or concrete piles for the slab but have heard in the past of people building rigid slabs on compacted fill. anyone done this and what were your soil conditions?
