Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 10, 2013 7:21 am Has anybody chosen a contrasting colour for "Internal Woodwork including doors (gloss enamel)"? I chose a light "greige" for my internal walls and requested Designer White for the skirting / door frames / doors. I was told a contrasting colour would be an additional cost and also the white requires a 3rd coat for even coverage which would be an upgrade. While they haven't gotten back to me on cost, I must admit - I think this is a shameless money grab. If you chose this, how much did you have to pay for the upgrade? Re: Cost of Upgrade for White Internal Woodwork & Doors? 2Nov 10, 2013 8:01 am On our color appointment selection list it actually has a spot for walls and also archi/cornice/doors, so we either can select same Colour or contrasting. No extra cost just FYI, so I agree that it may just be the builder trying to price tag something that usually comes included.. I agree that it may just be the builder trying to price tag something that usually comes included. Agreed. A friend of mine worked at Dulux; she says they're taking me for a ride with the 3 coat bit. There have been a few things like this that have put a sour taste in my mouth. I would just like to know if anyone else has paid for it and if so, how much. Might go to Masters and price the paint, to have something to compare it to when she domes back to me with the price. Re: Cost of Upgrade for White Internal Woodwork & Doors? 5Nov 10, 2013 9:50 am snuck Given how common/standard white is I'd call that a cash grab! Yep. What would you do? Re: Cost of Upgrade for White Internal Woodwork & Doors? 6Nov 10, 2013 9:54 am Ask them how much you can take off the contract to do the painting yourself? Or pay for the two coats only and tell them you'll do 'the third one'? Tell them they are being silly? I dunno. I have a builder who has a partnered approach, isn't asking for extra money every step, isn't petty.... I'm paying a small premium so it probably will cost the same but I'm not getting asked every five minutes which is less stressful. Re: Cost of Upgrade for White Internal Woodwork & Doors? 7Nov 10, 2013 9:55 am Oh... and on that front... we're doing the whole house painting ourselves. Whether we paint it ourselves (with two small kids under 3... hahahaha!) or pay someone (likely). Re: Cost of Upgrade for White Internal Woodwork & Doors? 8Nov 10, 2013 4:36 pm snuck (...) Or pay for the two coats only and tell them you'll do 'the third one'? Tell them they are being silly? I priced the paint today. Was told I'd need more than 10 litres, so a 15 litre can would be plenty. It was on sale for $115. That being said, it wouldn't cost that much extra as they'd be saving it by not using the light greige they're presently contracted to paint. At least I know the cost, so she can't tell me some wild number. I'm contemplating doing it myself, just like I'm doing kitchen overhead cabinets post-handover as I had no idea they weren't included in the price. The whole reason we're building in the first place is because neither my husband or I are particularly handy. Starting to think I might need to become handy real fast. I feel like telling her to skip the 3rd coat, but what says they'll do a second? It's too bad it's starting to feel like this. I even had a nightmare that I got into an argument with them, saying "When you bought your measuring tapes at Bunnings, did you pull out the tape to make sure all the numbers were there? No! Because you should just be able to assume some things!" LOL! Re: Cost of Upgrade for White Internal Woodwork & Doors? 9Nov 10, 2013 5:24 pm There is some additional prep work and clean up time etc required - but it's minimal. Maybe a few hundred dollars - because they'd have to do some of that prep anyway (unless they plan on using the exact same grade of paint on walls as on architraves - unlikely!). Ask whether you can go matt on the walls and semi gloss on the architraves ... when they say yes THEN ask them why it costs more then to go a different colour - same thing yah? Re: Cost of Upgrade for White Internal Woodwork & Doors? 10Nov 10, 2013 5:44 pm - My walls are in "Low sheen acrylic", 2 coats. - My doors are "Hume Prime Coat", which are primed by the manufacturer. - My door frames are "Timber, paint grade". - My skirting is "Primed MDF". So they are most certainly using 2 different paints. And I can't see why they need an extra coat of paint (more than if they were to do the light greige) for doors / skirting that are already primed white! 19.03.14 - Land Settlement 15.04.14 - Building Permit 28.04.14 - Earthworks 14.05.14 - Slab Stage 20.05.14 - Frame Stage 11.06.14 - Lock Up Stage 03.07.14 - Fix Stage 15.08.14 - New Home Presentation Re: Cost of Upgrade for White Internal Woodwork & Doors? 11Nov 11, 2013 10:53 pm So... Based on replies, should I assume I'm the only doofus being asked to pay this? 19.03.14 - Land Settlement 15.04.14 - Building Permit 28.04.14 - Earthworks 14.05.14 - Slab Stage 20.05.14 - Frame Stage 11.06.14 - Lock Up Stage 03.07.14 - Fix Stage 15.08.14 - New Home Presentation Okay, then the choice is really about the build quality of the door itself which means the brand name. Sorry I can't recommend one or the other so best to rely on comments… 5 3274 Thank you alexp79 and gommeqld for your advice, that's very helpful, thanks 3 7944 Thanks.
