Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 07, 2013 9:47 am I would like to have our bathrooms tiled to the full height. However I am not going to pay the builder to do it. I was wondering what would be the best option... Option 1 - take wall tiling out of our contract altogether and just do everything ourselves after handover. Option 2 - Allow the builder to do their standard tiling and we do full height afterwards. But my concern with this is making sure the tiles match. When choicing tiles can I get a larger order to ensure that they are all from the same batch? Or can I get the batch number from the builder so that I can give it to the tile company. Any other suggestions? My build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=68002 Re: Full Height Tiling 2Nov 07, 2013 2:52 pm 1. Can you do tiling afterwards? What about behind the toilet cistern and in the shower? 2. I would worry about matching the batches. I'd have to have a firm guarantee otherwise it could possibly end up looking quite odd. Re: Full Height Tiling 3Nov 07, 2013 3:27 pm I may be wrong (please correct me if I am, because I'm not sure), but isnt some tiling required in wet areas to grant the occupancy certificate? Does the builder allow you to supply an item or trade? Might still be more then you'd like but less then them doing it? I know we thought of of adding tiles after and the way the tiling is done any additional tiles would look odd. Re: Full Height Tiling 6Nov 08, 2013 8:34 am Forg Have you priced it with the builder? If you only end up saving $500 or so, may not be worth the hassle for the saving. I agree, the builder can normally buy the tiles cheaper anyway so you may not save as much as you think on materials - it will just be the labour. Re: Full Height Tiling 7Nov 08, 2013 8:51 am Our builder let us supply own trade. The tiling company gave us a discount on the tiles if we got them sourced through them. Our builder wanted to charge $7k ish and I don't think that was for full height. We are saving money, but also I am happier that I have someone I trust doing the tiles. It seems to be one of those things that can really be stuffed up! Re: Full Height Tiling 8Nov 08, 2013 10:05 am Thanks for all the replies. Our builder won't let us supply any materials, they said they've been experiencing too many delays because of this My hubby and a friend would do the tiles themselves so I would save a packet on labour seeing as that is the most expensive cost here in WA Mmm, this is proving more complicated than I thought. My build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=68002 Re: Full Height Tiling 9Nov 08, 2013 10:39 am If you can't supply do they let you nominate me trade? Our builder allowed that, though they did have to be qualified. Would mean they supply the tiles still but your trade does the work.... Re: Full Height Tiling 10Nov 08, 2013 2:19 pm Burnsfirsttime Thanks for all the replies. Our builder won't let us supply any materials, they said they've been experiencing too many delays because of this As a side note, our tiles have been delayed by 3 weeks through no fault of our own, AND this is after we agreed to change our tile selection to ones they had in stock to avoid any further delays. As they're being supplied and fitted by the builder if the build runs over we will be compensated.
