My question is, are they required to be secured to the ceiling? I had a look in the roof space and they have been left sitting over the lights but not secured at all. Any sparkies reading. 2Nov 02, 2013 4:29 pm It depends on the light in question. you dont need cans if your insulation/conbustible material is separated from the recessed light (a clearance around each fitting) eg the led lights i just installed only required a 30mm clearance to combustible material (wood beams) and also 30mm to insulation, 50mm height. the batman who installed the insulation left rather large gaps around the fittings. 30+cm squares. and said he does this in all houses with recessed lights as its better to be safe than sorry. but once again it depends on the manufactures specs on the lights. 4.5.2.3.3 of as3000:2007 Amdt 2 covers all this in all ways including the "cans" but in regards to your question about cans if your going to go that way. they would most defiantly need be fixed to the fitting. most that i have seen are all one piece with a gimbal There may be answers here but can't find anything.
