Browse Forums Building A New House Re: decking the porch area - how much should it cost 4Oct 22, 2013 4:54 pm OurLindrum52 Hi I did this recently myself - having never done this before and quite proud of the result. You will save significant money doing it yourself. It is not difficult if you are handy. I took my time to research, plan and ask questions. I started by researching the web (Google is your friend) and Bunnings have videos of how to build a deck on their website. I used treated pine for stumps, bearers and joists and cumaru for the decking. Decking is a hardwood like merbau, but not as dark and more even in colour variation. Cumaro does not bleed tannins like merbau so it won't stain adjacent brickwork, concrete, etc. Cumaro is around same price as merbau, but not as easy to find. I used Heart Street Timber in Dandenong and they are great. I did a 140mm wide picture frame edge around deck with 90mm wide boards in main area. I bought a drop saw so I could do mitred edges in the corners, but that was the only special equipment I bought. The price of cumaro 140mm is $14p/m and 90mm $7p/m (I think!) Heart Street timber can give you a quote on that, plus you will need treated pine for joists (90 x 45) and bearers (90 x 90) and stumps (90 x 90). You'll also need stainless steel decking screws which they also supply. Anything else (dyna bolts, triple grips, joist hangers, nails, ready-mix concrete for stumps, etc...) you can get from Bunnings. So for the decking you would need 90 lineal metres of Camaro/merbau just for the top. For any edges you would need extra, so assuming there are three sides not attached to house, you would need another 25 lineal metres, so total 115 lineal metres. Total cost of cumaru would be approx. $750 - 800. You'll need to work out the design for you joists and bearers and whether you need stumps. If you're building the deck over an existing concrete porch, then you won't need stumps, but angled to dyna bolt to thru concrete and support the joists. Here are some progress pics of our front deck under construction. The little LED's I used on the rear decking and have also since added to the front deck. I got these on eBay. Paul Great job, Lindrum! I love those LEDs in deck. Sent you a PM by the way! Thanks. Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck?
