Have you looked at SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) by any chance ? Maybe they're being over-zealous in avoiding potential warranty claims, because they don't know; but LED's are pretty expensive to need to replace all the time. Re: Solar Passive First Home, Meadow Springs WA 27Oct 25, 2013 3:53 pm Kash Nice plans! I only know the basics of passive solar so can't comment on that, but I like the overall layout and I think we're on a similar timeline for titles. Ardie, with the window dimensions, the height is measured in brick courses, then the width in mm. So your 28-2410 is 28 courses high ( ie full height of a standard ceiling, so I guess you have 31c ceilings?) and 2.4m wide. A 18c window is your typical bedroom, starting around waist height and a 7c is probably a hi-light. Hope that helps. I still have the plans of my current house so I spent some time comparing the two to get a feel for my new windows. Thanks Kash Re: Solar Passive First Home, Meadow Springs WA 28Oct 25, 2013 3:55 pm chardy You can get fireproof hoods to go over your LED downlights preventing heat loss and dealing with the fire risk, although LEDs don't produce anyway near as much heat. Have you looked at SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) by any chance ? I have looked at lots different buliding materials but getting a builder in Perth aka Double Brick Capital to try something different is very hard. Even brick veneer or reverse brick veneer is too hard for most Re: Solar Passive First Home, Meadow Springs WA 29Oct 25, 2013 4:06 pm Hi, Nice plans For those wondering about window sizes, the first number is courses high as mentioned, second number is width in mm. A course is approximately 86mm, so a 28c window is approximately 2408mm high. Placement in the wall can vary depending on the builder and the design. A 28c window would probably run from floor level to eave height as your eaves are usually about 3 courses lower than ceiling height, so I would assume you have 31c ceilings if you have a 28c window. If you're just wanting approximations it's probably good to assume top of window is 25c for most standard windows. Cheers, Duke. Re: Solar Passive First Home, Meadow Springs WA 30Oct 25, 2013 6:36 pm Great plan, good use of the space. Just look at moving the garage door back inline with the store so it opens onto the store areas wall.... Otherwise consider a door that opens in but swings 180 degrees. But much of that may be personal preference. Also check its a solid door with a proper lock like your front door Re: Solar Passive First Home, Meadow Springs WA 31Oct 26, 2013 1:39 am fmac Great plan, good use of the space. Also check its a solid door with a proper lock like your front door Its gonna be a roller door like a manual one, cant extend the wall as it would pretty much hinder the breezes to the nib wall for the bedroom right behind the garage there! Thanks for the comments about the plan though Re: Solar Passive First Home, Meadow Springs WA 32Oct 26, 2013 9:02 am I meant the door from the garage into the house Manual roller door at the back of the garage is very handy Re: Solar Passive First Home, Meadow Springs WA 33Oct 26, 2013 10:10 am Sounds like a plan! Another thing to look into i guess, is it possible to get solid cavity sliding doors? Do you generally change the doors at pre-start? The house is in for costing atm and i dont want to keep bugging them about little things like doors housebythewater Sounds like a plan! I look forward to following. Re: Solar Passive First Home, Meadow Springs WA 35Oct 26, 2013 2:04 pm As it's an internal door prestart should be fine. Not sure you'd want a sliding door, don't think it's as secure as a standard door... Re: Solar Passive First Home, Meadow Springs WA 38Mar 26, 2014 2:45 pm Nice thread. I have a block that has 25 mtrs north facing so like your design. I am thinking deciduous trees also. Reading about your vertical garden maybe tomatoes or similar that grow thru the summer and rip them out winter and the benefit of fresh food?
