Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 15, 2013 12:42 pm Hi everyone, Our building has progressed to the tiling of wet areas. Unfortunately we've just received a call from the tiler informing us that they're out of our chosen tile (we need 340m2 as we're tiling the floor of whole house plus the bathrooms in the same colour). Our only option is to either go with an alternative tile or wait until November which means our build will be held up for at least 3 weeks. Any suggestions / experiences? As a side note we haven't gone with the builders range as we upgraded to porcelain, and we chose our tiles at least 4 months ago, so they have had plenty of time to place the order. Also if we refuse to chose a different tile, and the build runs over, does the builder pay us for the delay? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. Re: Tile of choice out of stock - what would / did you do? 2Oct 15, 2013 1:15 pm That's why you don't pick tiles that early. They run out and change batches all the time so its best to pick them as late as possible. Even though you chose them 4 months ago, they don't allocate that amount of tiles to you straight away. If they did that they'd have a warehouse full of tiles sitting there doing nothing. There isn't enough warehouse space. And no I doubt the builder will pay for the delay, neither will the tile company. Sorry to be blunt, but the balls in your court, if you refuse to pick another tile Its on you. I'd be picking a similar tile and getting on with it. Re: Tile of choice out of stock - what would / did you do? 3Oct 15, 2013 2:45 pm How annoying for you!! Do you like any of the alternative tiles? If it was me and I didn't like the alternative tiles then I would probably wait the 3 weeks but I'd be so annoyed. If there was an alternative tile that wasn't too bad then I'd pick it. Tiles are such an important part of how the house feels you want to be happy with it and not always regretting not waiting 3 weeks. Good luck! We'll go this weekend and see if there's anything comparable. As for choosing the tiles too early in the build, we were told we had to make a selection during the framing stage which is what we did. Seems silly if they can't guarantee stock - why ask people to make the selection that early on??? Re: Tile of choice out of stock - what would / did you do? 9Oct 16, 2013 8:37 am Novice8 Thanks guys. Seems silly if they can't guarantee stock - why ask people to make the selection that early on??? I dunno, the tile industry has always been that way. So its taken 4 months from framing stage to tiles? That's a bit long isn't it? maybe that's why. But imagine if they kept every single order for tiles sitting there for however long between customers ordering and then actually needing them. There isn't enough warehouse space in the country. EDIT: Actually 4 months isn't that long between frames and tiles now that I think about it. I guess you're just unlucky then. Hope you can find another one you like! I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3328 Bought in Nov 21 at the height of the market (classic). Good area, atrocious floor plan.
