It was a massive help to me as a first time builder. In terms of what people call their "usual inclusions" - run through that in detail with the builder. Not just the quality of the finishings but also whether it actually finishes the house to a level that you are comfortable with. Things like the electricals (do you have enough power points in each room, do you have adequate lighting), shelving and floorings plus the obvious add-ons post build such as curtains. Don't rely on the builder to remind or advise you on anything that you might be missing out - different people might be better or worse at it, but the end of the day it's up to you to work it out.
