Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 25, 2013 2:13 am For insides of your built-in-robe in bedrooms - drawers, shelves, hangers etc - is it best &/or cheapest to have the builder do the full fit-out or to DIY with Ikea/Bunnings? Ikea have such an array of drawers & trouser hangers & shoe storage & other fancy stuff. I quite like the idea of doing Ikea fit-out after I move in when I can see how much stuff I have to go in, and I can try this & that and add to it later... but would this DIY possibly save money because I'm not paying for labour - or would it actually cost alot more than asking the builder to include shelves & drawers? Does the average builder do drawers & stuff in BIR's or do they just whack in a couple of shelves & a railing? Any tips on what to have in a good BIR in kid's rooms? Are lots of drawers good or do they get in the way of the sliding robe doors? Maybe shelves are easier for kids? Thanks! When I saw the price I nearly choked. I have compared the price I was quoted with what I can get from Ikea to fit out the entier wardrobe and although it will cost me more through Ikea, I get the entire wardrobe fitted out instead of just 2 drawer areas. Our WAR in massive so the builders cost if way way over priced. Definately go DIY or go direct to a cabinet maker if you don't want to install yourself. Re: Built-in-robes fit-out - what do you like & who does 'em 5Sep 27, 2013 2:10 am Thanks! So with a wall to wall robe, should I get the builder to install the front with the sliding doors (then I DIY the inside) or get a cabinet maker to do the lot after? Ikea have whole robes with doors, but with that i'm getting back & side that I don't think I need, aren't I? Re: Built-in-robes fit-out - what do you like & who does 'em 6Sep 27, 2013 6:43 pm NEVER get the builder to do the full fit out. Don't forget they automatically add a profit margin to the sub-contractors price - so you are paying min 10-20% more for it. Standard is a hanging rail and/or an open mesh shelf rack. Check and see what is in your display home. We got our builder to leave just the shell - no doors - just the bulkhead over the empty space. This way we can slide either a pre-made set in (depending on where you live you can get a set ordered online - worked out about 1- 1.2K for standard size cupboard space - combo drawers, hanging space and shelves) or get a custom build. Make sure you get the credit back for the doors, hanging rail and anything else you don't want them to do. Price up what you want from IKEA and then use that as your 'comparison' amount when checking the other quotes. Re: Built-in-robes fit-out - what do you like & who does 'em 7Sep 27, 2013 6:57 pm I'm planning on getting a cabinet maker in after handover to design and install a wardrobe fitout. The builder is just supplying the standard hanging rail. It will be too expensive to get the builder to arrange the fit out.
