Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 07, 2013 8:17 pm I was hoping someone might be able to help with estimating earthworks costs. We have a block that requires the removal of 900mm of mixed sand/clay. We need to replace the 900mm taken with a sand pad. We're building approximately a 300sqm house, so I estimate approximately 300 cubic metres needs to be taken, disposed of and replaced. A potential builder has estimated these costs at 36k which appears excessive. Does anyone have any experience in these costs? Re: Earthworks cost? 2Nov 24, 2013 4:50 pm 300 m3 is a lot of trucks. This depends on where the dump site is located, like how far, and also what, if any costs to dump. cheers Re: Earthworks cost? 5Jul 10, 2014 6:21 pm No we didn't. The slab still needs 900mm of sand to stop the movement associated with clay soils. In the end we chose to only go down 500mm, and build up 400mm. This means we keep just below the R code requirement of not being more than 500mm above natural ground level. We have to retain around one side of the block, but this was much cheaper than moving 400mm of clay from the site. It will also help with our future drainage. 7 11936 We were lucky in that our old house was so small (86 square metres) compared to the new house, they were able to take enough readings around the old backyard house before… 8 37085 Fair Trading can issue orders to rectify and complete but once the matter goes to NCAT these orders are automatically vacated.
