Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 04, 2013 5:18 pm Hi guys, I am building double storey house. my ceiling height is 2700 for both floors my front entrance door and front garage door is 2400 in height, also my bi-folding door and staker in living room is 2400 in height. i have a mixture of 1800 and 2100 high windows on ground floor, and mixture of 1200, 1500 and 1800 upstairs. i have read many threads here, because I have a high ceiling 2700, i will make all my internal doors 2340 to make the house look bigger and classy. my question is, 1. how high should i set my windows should I set it as 2400 from floor level so that all my windows are align with my entrance door, bi-fold, staker etc.. i think the benefit of that is when brick layer is laying brick wall, there will be no gap between the lintel and the window because they are all the same height. 2. what about upstairs? given that there is no entrance/bi-fold/staker upstairs, should i also make it 2400 high, to be consistent. 3. also i have read here that people are suggesting to have the height of window the same height as internal doors. in this case if my internal door is 2340, is it advisable to set my windows 2340 high as well? but then, for ground floor, given that my entrance door/bi-fold/stakers are 2400 high set from the slab level, there will be approx 60mm gap between the lintel and the window... any suggestion is appreciated Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 2Sep 04, 2013 5:32 pm Hi, We have 2700mm ceilings up and down stairs. All tops of doors, bi-folds, windows, etc. are at 2400mm except for a couple of feature windows. Keep it consistent...my 2c worth. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 3Sep 04, 2013 7:40 pm PAB_34 Hi, We have 2700mm ceilings up and down stairs. Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 4Sep 04, 2013 7:47 pm We have 2.7 mtr ceiling height but did not think about doors, duh. However we have upgraded internal doors to 2340. Finished height of 2400 with door trim. In the main entertaining space the windows and doors are 2400 high. However we have kept the others at normal height as we would have had to go back through council, shame but there it is. I think it will look ok but if I could have they would all finish at 2400. The only thing with the higher windows is no brickwork above the windows and doors but I have seen houses like this and it looks fine to me Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 5Sep 04, 2013 7:57 pm melbbuild PAB_34 Hi, We have 2700mm ceilings up and down stairs. I do not understand why there is no brickwork above windows of 2400 high? the height is 2700mm. isn't there another 300mm for brickwork? Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 7Sep 04, 2013 9:03 pm We went with 2400mm internal door height and window height. What is interesting is that most doors come as 2400mm and need to be cut down if shorter installed, so it really shouldn't be an upgrade cost to have a 2400mm installed. Our house is single storey and all I know is the builder told us there would not be brickwork above the window. As yours is double storey prob not an issue for you? Not everyone builds out of brick. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 11Sep 05, 2013 7:54 am Thanks pab, however in our situation which I was referring to we are building with brick. I think after doing some reading we would have needed to increase the height of our roof pitch in order to have brickwork above window. Currently we have 25 degree roof pitch. It would be great if someone could confirm if you are increasing ceiling height if you should increase roof pitch too Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 12Sep 05, 2013 9:01 am FairmontSAcustom Thanks pab, however in our situation which I was referring to we are building with brick. No worries, as your house is already under construction I wasn't sure. FairmontSAcustom I think after doing some reading we would have needed to increase the height of our roof pitch in order to have brickwork above window. Currently we have 25 degree roof pitch. It would be great if someone could confirm if you are increasing ceiling height if you should increase roof pitch too No, roof pitch has nothing to do with raising ceiling height. The style of roof truss, specifically, the edge detail (overhand) is what sets the distance above the window frame to the underside of the eaves (therefore the number of brick courses). To maximise this the bottom cord of the truss needs to be the eave level, not the top cord extending down past the exterior wall at the roof pitch angle. This is something that needed to be sorted out during the design stage. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 13Sep 05, 2013 9:28 am Thanks PAB, not sure that I entirely get it but I know for future reference to consider roof pitch angle if raising external door and window heights depending on what look you want Sorry to hijack but hope the info is useful to you OP. Good luck, sounds like consistency is the overall preference. Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 14Sep 05, 2013 12:32 pm I can easily see reading these threads itself is a fulltime job. Thanks PAB for the good explanation. Even though we are still at the tender stage (not signed yet) it drives me to H1 every single day like similar to most teenagers to FaceBook. Even though we are still at the tender stage (not signed yet) it drives me to H1 every single day like similar to most teenagers to FaceBook. I second this! Would it be fair to say that doors and windows should be consistent in living areas? But okay to have the smaller standard windows in the bedrooms etc? I would need to align my front door, study, alfresco and media if so.. I wonder how much more this would cost.. --- Re: window height and internal door height. what is best 16Oct 28, 2013 6:45 pm Yes, I'd like to know that also. We have been told by various people that there is a significant cost in having 8ft doors as opposed to normal height. I just can't understand why. We are looking at having 9ft ceilings and 8ft doors throughout and was just wondering. I owner built so know the additional cost of 2340mm vs 2040 doors My internal doors are about $30 more, door jamb $10 more. You need an extra 1.2m of architraves at $2. It prob takes a few minutes extra to install and there are extra cost for painting (although it's difficult to say if tradies get paid more for extra work). My carpenter and didn't charge me more for it and I don't know if my painter factored it in his quote. So the cost of it to me (and I assume builders) is say $50 per door. It was well worth it for me. Hi im new to this forum. What a terrific site! Im planning to put a granny flat in my back yard.
