Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 06, 2008 9:15 am Last night I received a lovely invoice from the State Revenue Office for Land Tax in the amount of $300. What!! We purchased the land last Feb 07 for $280,000 and then built our family home on it 6mths later. Can someone please explain what this tax is for?? We already paid stamp duty on the land. I've read all the information they have sent me and am now just waiting till 9am to ring them. Anyone else had to pay this?? I thought it was just for people who buy land for investment and then sell on years later??? Re: Land Tax...what!!! 4May 06, 2008 12:31 pm I live in Southbank. and every year I get sent a letter advising me that I have to pay tax on my carspace... and every year I fill out the form to tell them it is private, and every year they send the same letter
I'm expecting the same with land tax when we build Alan and Thuy in Melbourne Building a second time! Re: Land Tax...what!!! 5May 06, 2008 7:57 pm We sold our house and paid stamp duty, bought a vacant block of land intending to build our dream home on it and then got slugged with Land Tax.
We are currently renting and are a few weeks away from signing a contract to start building on this vacant block of land. I called the State Revenue Office and stated that our block will be our future principle place of residence. They claimed we still needed to pay the bill and then they would reimburse us once building had commenced! We received ours last month for our block even though it is our PPOR Annoying but thats the way it is. It does get reimbursed but what a hassle Mrs B Re: Land Tax...what!!! 7May 12, 2008 2:38 pm I got one too, as it takes a long time to build the house, I guess they "assume" if you are not living there (for our case) you might have rented it out during the construction period. We have to explain the whole thing and provide a few documents to support it. the exemption applies only to your principal place of residence - so you must live in it. The 200 days is continuous. You also have to apply for the exemption. 2 11110 If it's your primary residence then there is no tax deductions to be made. 4 101410 Hi, This is my first post.
