Re: Passive Solar design your views plz 16Sep 02, 2013 8:12 pm I don't think you are going to get much in the way of winter sun into the media room so I would cut down on the windows to that room. Again if you are have a neighbour or a solid fence on the North boundary you are not going to get sun on the bottom part of the windows so raise the sills. (see http://www.anewhouse.com.au/2012/01/winter-sun/) walls are better insulators than windows so if no solar advantage use wall, it also gives you more flexibility with regards to furniture placement. Those west facing windows will overheat the bedroom in the afternoon and evening so reduce the size and add a reflective film to the glass. I would also cut out the high east facing windows. Re: Passive Solar design your views plz 17Sep 02, 2013 8:14 pm Tippy Toes I can't see much cross ventilation in this design??? Also a 5.5m x 5.5m garage whilst be technically a double (by the local council standards) is a ridiculously small double and the extensive use of box gutters is something I'd also be worried about. With the master bed facing the street, you'll get 'street light' shining into the master unless you're planning on putting blinds up on all the high windows. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: Passive Solar design your views plz 18Sep 03, 2013 7:46 am Tippy Toes I can't see much cross ventilation in this design??? Each room has 2 windows one at hip height one at the top that can be opened to went out hot air. I am bit worried about the amount of glass in my living and master bed room. Custom Design -Ridgeline 2 with Private Builder Re: Passive Solar design your views plz 19Sep 03, 2013 8:17 am Zeedi - I think you need to have a serious look at this design and the goals you've got set. If you are really after passive solar then it's going to be a challenge - the high windows will let a lot of sun in during the winter months, but what about the summer - your eaves over the north side of the house don't look deep enough (nor does the one over the western end of the living area of the house). And if you have all those windows how are you going to manage light through them? What about the neighbours shade - where exactly will that land on your home at what times of year and how will that affect this stuff? (I see you are on a very small block with close neighbours yes?) You are right to be a bit worried - a lot of glass will a) bring down your desired rating, and b) bring it down for a reason! Thanks for your views. I generated 3d Model of my house and my neighbours to have a look at the sun. The summer sun atm is coming at the bottom of the large window in the living which we have plans to cover up using plants in the garden. Not sure will it work? As i discovered Thermal Curtains is a must in the living area. Master bed room will be having tinted glass to reduce the harsh summer sun along with eves and curtains. snuck And if you have all those windows how are you going to manage light through them?
