Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 29, 2013 9:56 am We are just starting on building our dream home and are throwing around a couple of ideas and don't know which way to go. Unfortunately the street we are building in has no gas at all. So we can either go for a gas stove/cook top with gas bottles or just simply go with an electric stove and cook top. What do you have and what would you choose and why ? Thanks all for the help Re: Gas stove with gas bottles v's electric 2Aug 29, 2013 10:18 am Like you we do not have mains gas. We only have bottled. Gas cooktop is the way to go with an electric oven is our preference in the last 3 houses. Having gas bottles is no dramas whatsoever. A bottle will last over 12 months so its not really that costly either. I hate cooking on electric stoves so I am having gas bottles. Electric ovens are great these days so they can be electric. I am told induction stovetops are just as good as gas though but quite pricey. Building the Leabrook with Fairmont Homes in Mallala, SA. Re: Gas stove with gas bottles v's electric 5Aug 29, 2013 12:17 pm tasha_is_clueless I am told induction stovetops are just as good as gas though but quite pricey. Induction is allegedly better; but as always there're downsides. You must have steel pots & pans to use with induction, so if anyone's got any of that 70's glass cookware or (more likely) aluminium then it won't work. My favourite huuge pan is aluminium, so when our place is finished it'll need to be replaced. Re: Gas stove with gas bottles v's electric 6Aug 29, 2013 12:25 pm The most common combination seems to be electric oven and gas cooktop, although inductions are becoming increasingly popular. The major benefit of gas for the cooktop is the ability to adjust temperature quickly - as you can imagine electric elements take some time to heat up and cool down whereas gas is instantaneous. I personally don't like electric cooktops because of the danger an exposed hot element poses even after you have finished cooking. Keep in mind also that you may want gas for other appliances in your house - for example your hot water system (gas boosted solar is what most builders seem to install), your ducted heating or even your BBQ (which can be plumbed in). If you have the gas available for other uses then which cooktop you decide on is really a matter of personal preference. Don't confuse the behaviour of induction with the behaviour of traditional electric cooktops; induction stops being hot as soon as you turn it off, in the same way as gas (ie. there'll still be hot bits to burn yourself on). Induction also adjusts temperature quickly. I know two people in rentals where they had bottled gas just for cooking; they reckon they'd go through a LOT of bottles if it was used for heating. And maybe it's because we're in Sydney, but some sort of gas ducted heating was going to cost as much for us to get installed as airconditioning ... which is no less efficient at heating, but does cooling as well. Re: Gas stove with gas bottles v's electric 8Aug 29, 2013 3:37 pm @ Forg; to clarify, in referring to the "cons" I was talking about electric cooktops alone, not induction (which, I know, technically speaking are a form of electric cooktop). @ magical; maybe what Forg is trying to say is that you should look into induction for your cooktop?
