Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 28, 2013 10:48 am We really don't want the honeycomb-type doors, but it seems to cost $5000-6000 dollars to upgrade ALL of our internal doors to either foam-filled or solid construction. That is a lot of money!! Then we had the bright idea that we could save money by leaving the doors to the robes as honeycomb, and just upgrade passageway or room entry doors to solid/foam-filled but the door company is being totally unhelpful and not able to suggest a door style which is available in BOTH honeycomb and solid core. So they are suggesting we have flush robe doors (honeycomb) and moulded, solidcore (non-matching with the robe doors) room-entry doors. Surely this is a bad idea?? AARGH I'm pulling my hair out, so frustrating!! We have honeycomb doors in our current rental and it's really dreadul. I can hear a pin drop at the other end of the house behind two lots of closed doors. No chance of getting anything done which the kids sleep, and no chance of me or hubby getting a nap while the kids are awake! Not to mention lack of powder room/bathroom privacy!! Has anyone done something similar here? Please don't tell me we have to cough up 6000 as the only way of achieving this. Seems such a waste for the robe doors..... P.S. The builder uses Cor!nthian doors. Their website is contradictory and unhelpful in what comes in what construction and sizes and I have also spoken to a sales lady over the phone who gave incorrect information. I am jack of it all. Are you sure a solid/foam filled door will be enough to stop a particular sound resonating through? Plenty of advice around the web to try and minimise sound through a door but generally a solid core door with seals is sufficient to deaden most noise through it. Corinthian Doors are part of the Jeldwen group, as is Stegbar and a couple of others. The company is going through a 'transition' stage with staff and other issues apparently. Anyway, we have Corinthian doors (Deco3 style) all solid core which are un-available in Qld according to their website, but we got them anyway. We had similar issues with Stegbar of what they thought was available, or not, and what we actually got (products, colours, etc). The best thing to do is keep at your builder, have them chase up the doors until they talk to someone who knows waht they are talking about - you just have stay at them, unfortunately. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: Did you upgrade your internal doors?? Why is it so hard? 5Sep 03, 2013 2:21 pm Okay looks like nowhere can combine honeycomb and solif/foam-core doors for us. So we're looking at 5-6k to upgrade all our internal doors. I've love to hear from someone who's upgraded their internal doors and why, and if they are happy with them? It is so much money but hubby and I really feel it will impact on the feel of the house (in general how solid and quality it feels, but also the decent room-noise separation). Am I on my own in despising honeycomb doors? I also wonder whether all honeycomb-fill doors are made equal, because I doubt our old house (built in '99) had solid doors but they certainly felt a lot less flimsy than the doors in our current cheapo rental house... anyone got any ideas? It is so much money but hubby and I really feel it will impact on the feel of the house (in general how solid and quality it feels, but also the decent room-noise separation). Am I on my own in despising honeycomb doors? You're not on your own.....we hate them as well so we have all solid core doors in our place. As for the 'feel' of the door, the easiest analogy I can think of is the difference between opening and closing a Datsun180B car door compared to a mid 80's S class Merc. Solid core doors are heavy (ours are also 2400mm x 820mm) hung on 3 hinges and cut out noise really well. All the walls dividing up downstairs (powder room, laundry, study and masterbed) have sound insulation bats in them so the solid doors were mandatory to keep everything 'quite'. To upgrade all our doors was under $3000 so it wasn't that big of a step up.....$5-$6 is another story. Good luck. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: Did you upgrade internal doors?? Advice on honeycomb/sol 7Sep 03, 2013 6:29 pm We upgraded all our internal doors for exactly the same reason. We wanted a quiet house, and put sound batts in all internal walls, so without changing internal doors to solid core, this would have reduced effectiveness of the sound batts. We left wardrobe doors as standard (honeycomb) but all other internals doors were upgraded to solid. We did not bother with wardrobe doors because these are inside bedrooms and the contents of the wardrobe provides additional sound insulation between rooms. (We have hinged doors to all wardrobes because I hate sliding wardrobe doors.) Our builder used Corinthian also, however I believe they now use Hume. Our door profile is flush in keeping with our modern style, which may have kept upgrade cost down compared to solid panel doors, however to upgrade 14 doors to solid was $1,806. Corinthians name for solid doors is 'Solidor'. They do reduce sound, even on sliding doors which we have to laundry and butlers' pantry. And as PAB_34 has said, the solid doors have a nice feel to them when you open and close them due to the extra weight. Okay, then the choice is really about the build quality of the door itself which means the brand name. Sorry I can't recommend one or the other so best to rely on comments… 5 3234 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15884 If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8283 |
