Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - PCI Date 181Mar 28, 2015 4:50 pm I've been a bit quiet on here lately. .. now that the house is almost finished we've got lots to do. I've been obsessing over lighting for the last few weeks and today and yesterday we managed to agree and actually buy some. We got some nice pendants for the hallway and living areas. Pci is still on track for next Thursday. The house is looking great. .. almost finished. The cleaners have already been hard at work. We've been happy with most of our choices except the color of the bathroom wall tiles. .. They're too creamy and look a bit green against the wall color. Our rental is starting to look crazy with the extra furniture and lighting we've been buying as well as all the packing boxes we've been collecting. Can't wait to move in but it's still quite a few weeks away as we're doing our own lighting and flooring. How exciting, it feels like your build has been soooo quick!!! Can't wait to see some pics too!!! Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - PCI 184Apr 04, 2015 12:35 am We had PCI yesterday. It all went pretty well. A few issues like paint/grout touch ups etc. A few things I don't know we'll be completely happy with...one is the timber doors that were painted white. Some are very rough due to the timber grain - they're going to give them another coat, hopefully that will make them look a bit better. Also the way the sliding timber doors have been installed to the theatre looks pretty average - you can see the brass brackets at the bottom as you walk into the room - they're going to paint those white to make them not stand out as much. The other thing I'm a bit disappointed in is the flimsiness of the sliding mirror doors to the bedrooms....the site supervisor said they're like that as they've tried to minimise the chunkiness of the framing for aesthetic reasons. They're also completely out of square...they're going to try and improve on that. Overall it was a good meeting. Our supervisor is super easy to get on with and happy to follow stuff up. We're getting really excited about key handover on the 17th. We've got the electrician/timber floors/carpets/decking/kitchen splashback/mirrors all booked for soon after we get keys. We're hoping we can move in about 3-4 weeks after keys. Two above the kitchen island. The two small white pendants - they were on special so we got em. Will likely hang them above a side table in the open plan living as we don't have any power for a table lamp. Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - PCI Date 187Apr 04, 2015 12:13 pm Congratulations on PCI! How exciting to know you will be moving in a few weeks. The place looks great, love your lighting choices! Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - PCI Date 188Apr 04, 2015 10:13 pm All looks great justlearning! Congrats on PCI. Your SS sounds good, even though those few bits and pieces must be frustrating, it is good to know that everything will be rectified. I just love the way that light pours into your kitchen area from the bi folds. It really is beautiful. That is a really lovely kitchen All your cabinets and bathrooms look so good. I got excited seeing your loo (hahaha) because that is the same one we picked too! Wow massive garage! Looks like you will have lots of storage room!! And love love love all your lighting choices. Just stunning. Can't believe your getting your keys soon Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - PCI Date 189Apr 25, 2015 10:41 am We've now got keys! It all went off without a hitch. A few minor things outstanding to fix up but nothing major. The site has been busier now that we've got keys than before. We've had the electrician in installing lighting, the landscapers, the plumber for the alfresco sink, the mirrors and splash back installed. Pics... And well done at organising all those trades, sounds like your home will be finished in no time! I love those lights they look stunning Can't wait to see some more pictures! How different it all looks with the floors going in. Can't wait to see that landscaping plan come together too Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - PCI Date 191Apr 28, 2015 12:39 am Congratulations on keys!!! Oh wow your floorboards look amazing - messy, but amazing! Are they jarrah? Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - PCI Date 192Apr 28, 2015 5:01 am congratulations!!!! Love those lights in the hallway and your floors and the lovely living area with all the windows is great. But I'm in love with the 'planter' around the tree - it looks like it would be the perfect place to sit and enjoy a bit of sunshine Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - PCI Date 193May 10, 2015 1:33 am The jarrah floors are now finished. .. they're a bit shinier than I expected and they're very pink! I hope the color will tone down over time and become more jarrah like. The deck is also finished. That's spotted gum and the color clashes a bit with the internal floors but I think once it's all furnished it will be okay. The floors are so reflective it's like there's a skylight on the ceiling. I like the skirting boards. .. Still need the final touch up. Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - PCI Date 199May 31, 2015 11:49 pm Loving your backyard! How cool is the neighbours parapet wall as a feature in your yard Re: Dale Alcock Build in Kensington - Moved In 200Oct 14, 2015 12:10 am Sorry everyone for the total silence! We've been moved in now for about five months! I'm not on the computer much these days, hence no posts. I keep meaning to post photos but just haven't downloaded them yet. The house it great. We're loving living here. It's so good having the extra space with the kids. The 'sewing room' is being shared with the kids as their play room...but it's great having a space where they can keep their toys and you can shut the door. The deck has been awesome over winter..the kids can still play outside under cover. For anyone that's building and wants to know the things that worked, and things that I would have changed, here goes: The good: - I love, love the big open plan area at the back of the house and how it opens out to the deck. It's great for entertaining, and when you're in the kitchen you don't miss out on anything. - I love the bifolds...I open them almost every morning. It was worth upgrading the second slider to bifolds too as it looks great - I love the lighting in the open plan area (see separate thread on lighting design) - I love our double shower head - I love our kitchen. It's really functional and just the right size. - I love having the bar stools next to the work bench (as opposed to the other side of the bench)...it's great for having the little munchkins in the kitchen helping me (I've never baked so much before - We got shutters in the living area - they look good and are easy to operate - I love the floors - they look pretty speccy. Everyone mentions them when they come over. - Believe it or not, it's actually easier to keep clean than the smaller old houses I've lived in. I think it's a combination of no drafts, the mess not being so 'intense' and just wanting to clean because everything looks so pretty - The cloak room is great near the front door to store shoes, bags and jackets. Keeps the entry nice and tidy (now that we've become a no shoes house!) - The automatic roller door on the back of the garage was so worth the cost. The dogs sleep in there, so we're constantly opening and shutting it and can do it with the remote control from bed in the morning to let them out. The not so good: - Hot water takes a long time to get hot - would have moved system closer to kitchen if possible - The hot water system was setup wrong and we had really, really bad pressure. We only just got it fixed and now it's great (so ask if you're having the same problem) - The exhaust fan in the bathroom drips water on us (the builder says it condensation and can't be fixed, but I think the ducting is too kinked - I'll bring it up at maintenance) - The powerpoints are too far from the door frames - not only do you have to reach too far into the rooms, but it makes it difficult for placing artwork - We had loads of broken drain pipes - the builder has lifted our driveway twice to fix! It just got laid for the third time yesterday - A slightly larger master bedroom would have been nice - Still living with curtains at the front of the house (couldn't part with the money for shutters so was going to make curtains) - Still haven't finished the landscaping - sand still in the back yard - The glass doors get dirty quickly with little hands all over them (but it's worth it as they look so good) - The entry doesn't have a window and is a bit dark and a bit small. But we probably couldn't have changed that. It's good that we chose the translucent glass for the light. I'll post some pics up soon. Thanks everyone for the nice posts and assistance. Cheers 2 9001 Thank you so much everyone. This all makes a lot of sense. I guess when you talk to a builder who butters up everything to look very polished, you get to start believing… 7 17581 |
