Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 15, 2013 1:52 pm Hi everyone. Wandering if it's worth to upgrade from Venini to Westinghouse appliances.. oven, gas cooktop and exhaust fan. Upgrade cost is about $500. Should I just keep the Venini ones and then buy new stuff eventually? Or is it worth investing $500 now and is Westinghouse worth the upgrade cost? Re: Did you upgrade your appliances 2Aug 15, 2013 2:47 pm i would spend the extra and upgrade i have never heard of venini and westinghouse has always been good Re: Did you upgrade your appliances 3Aug 15, 2013 4:35 pm Choice in your local public library may be your friend; see if you can find out the model numbers for the appliances they intend to use. Could be the unknown Venini is better than a bargain-basement Westinghouse model ... or even that they're all made in the same factory using the same components at the same time (which is quite possible given that project builders will tend to source all their appliances from the one supplier). Re: Did you upgrade your appliances 4Aug 15, 2013 4:47 pm Do you get anything extra for the $500, such as a wider 750mm or 900mm oven for that price over the standard size? That I think is always worth the extra money. Re: Did you upgrade your appliances 5Aug 15, 2013 4:57 pm Westinghouse is our standard, and as much as I would like to upgrade, I just don't think it is worth the money. We can't supply our own appliances, the credit they give us back is not worth much, and the upgrade has a 30% markup on it. So it seems to make better sense to stay with it. Having said that, I think Westinghouse is pretty good. We have had a bottom of the line, cheapest available Westinghouse oven for over 10 years and never an issue with it. (Except that it won't clean itself, and no-one else in the house cleans it either, except when my mum comes to visit from interstate once a year!). Really comes down to your budget and whether you'd rather spend that money elsewhere. Going for higher ceilings, better taps etc.. I figure appliances can die later and I can change them then.. And maybe at that point can afford something nicer like Bosch!! But worried Venini will really be crappy and quit too soon! Re: Did you upgrade your appliances 9Aug 15, 2013 9:45 pm We have Westinghouse as standard appliances in our house. Really happy with them. Venini is a cheap brand and I would pay the extra to upgrade to the Westinghouse Modified Fernside 38 Rawson Homes Blog: http://www.thehousethatmatandjenbuilt.blogspot.com Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60501 Re: Did you upgrade your appliances 10Aug 15, 2013 9:51 pm We are not bothering to upgrade our appliances just yet. Instead we decided to put our money into things that are harder or more expensive to upgrade later on ie. solid timber stairs, porcelain tiles, kitchen cabinetry etc. I don't like the appliances provided as standard but I'll either wait until they die or upgrade them when I can afford it. Whichever comes first. At least they are the size I want (900mm) so changeover shouldn't be a problem Custom downslope build Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61873 Blog http://www.buildingroyalmanor.blogspot.com.au Re: Did you upgrade your appliances 11Nov 01, 2013 7:05 pm I was going to go with the standard appliances, but then got a quote for fun on a few upgrades. The prices actually came in pretty sharp once the credits were factored in. Of the four appliances we purchased (2 ovens, dishwasher, exhaust fan) only one could be found cheaper retail. One of the ovens was on deep discount for $80 less. With installation, I was very happy with the upgrade prices on the three other products. I think it is worth at least asking the question. Re: Did you upgrade your appliances 12Nov 01, 2013 8:25 pm We will be lucky to be able to supply our own so got a credit back, and our builder is happy to install them for us. Over the last 12 months we have stockpiled gear from various warehouse/carpark type sales, our undermount sink, schweigen rangehood and kitchen mixer for 50% off and a pristine ex display integrated microwave- To give an example we saved around $3500 over the retail prices plus the builder credited us back $1860 for their standard oven, cooktop and rangehood. This way you can control exactly what products you get too-well worth it if you can keep your builder happy in the process. Re: Did you upgrade your appliances 13Nov 01, 2013 9:29 pm hi we put our own in as my husband sells ovens and stuff and can get a great price. we had to twist the builders arm to allow this and we also want to put in our own sinks but or they said NO. I say do the upgrade if you are not going to be putting in better stuff later. have a look at what you want and see if you have the money within your budget. a good oven can cost about $2000 (that's a cheap good oven) if you want a rangehood in later that could cost a lot more due to cabinet work and cutting a bigger hole in the ceiling. or you could wait 5 years for the one the builder puts in to break! I am putting in two ovens when we build and I have a spot in the kitchen to put in another two ovens within the next year. so you can replace ovens easily because most brands do standard sizes. sinks are hard to change over due to the cutout. hotplates are ok to change you may need a Plummer out for that. once you have a rangehood they are easily to change (my husband has done that before and he isn't hands on sort of guy) $500 is a great price if its all the stuff you said. does it include a range hood? Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive).
