Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 14, 2013 8:36 pm Hi, I'm looking to build without the usage of a wooden frame. As a result I'm investigating multiple different systems such as hebel powerblock, timbercrete and icf systems. Now I wondered how these compare to the standard framed brick veneers? I understand you need a minimum star rating of 6 these days... but how is that achieved? eg is there a minimal R value for walls and roof? - bca code? I found a couple, but they all stated different minimal values ranging from 1.8 to 2.8 in Melbourne area (zone 6) This is the R value of brick veneer with R2.0 bats insulation: 1. Outdoor Air Film 0.03 2. 110mm Brickwork 0.14 3. 50mm Air Cavity 0.28 4. Reflective Paper 0.00 5. Wall Batt 2.00 6. Plasterboard 0.10 7. Indoor Air Film 0.03 Total R-Value 2.58 do the volume builders use these R2 bats by default these days? What did you use? Mainly asking, because some of these "alternative" systems provide statements they are better for insulation etc. Whilst that might be true, it all depends to what you compare. So i'm basically after: - what's current minimum? - what's the standard build these days? Re: energy - star rating - insulation 2Aug 19, 2013 8:11 pm The building code of Australia 2013 calls for external walls in zone 6 to have a toal R Value of 2.8. Just remember that this is the whole wall system, not just the added insulkation. Most builders will have individual designs assessed using software, so wall ratings will vary. @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look. 10 years ago was a different software than we use now. it has had a lot of changes over the past years.
