Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 04, 2013 10:23 pm Hi homeone forum folk. Have visited here a few times over our WIP building experience. My wife and I are building with JG King - in a steel frame for a holiday house. Tiling has just been done (and painting is being finished) before we have electrical, plumbing and carpet + final fixout items taking place over the next few weeks. Whilst we have had a pretty smooth experience, and have a very good/helpful site supervisor, I'm starting to get nervous over the PCI / Final owner inspection approaching. I have almost zero hands-on/building experience. What is the general consensus here over the value/benefit of hiring an independent Building Inspector to assist in this process? Are they typically costly - and there is some travel involved (being a regional coastal location ~1hr drive from melb SE suburbs)? We were told we will get a handover/PCI pack from them along with a roll of red-dot stickers to mark anything we are not happy with. Any links/ideas/feedback welcome. Thanks Sheeds. Re: Approaching PCI in a few weeks. DIY or get in an Inspect 2Aug 06, 2013 9:32 am There are threads and threads of discussion on PCI/ handover checklists. In my opinion, nothing beats a trained eye. For the price they charge, it can save you big $$$ in the future and it gives you a better sense of comfort. If all is good, all is good! Re: Approaching PCI in a few weeks. DIY or get in an Inspect 4Aug 06, 2013 11:17 pm I definately recommend getting an independent inspector in to look through your house at PCI. They are trained to pick up anything that may be in breach of BCA std, but will also pick up on things like paint and plaster issues. For example, ours picked up that bricks were overhanging slab and ordered our builder to get an engineers report confirming that that part of the house was structurally sound (engineer certified that all was good). Obviously arm yourself with as much info as possible about what to look for so you can point out what needs to be fixed. Trawl through the forums to make up a list of things to check at PCI. Good luck with everything. Just the way it is. 1 8707 Can someone please offer some advice? Im DESPERATE. Because I'm completely and utterly exhausted. How long are variations taking with other companies at the moment?
