Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 01, 2013 10:49 am So, we have gotten to the stage where we have got our block of land and a set of final drawings (almost at prestart, wahoo!). Yesterday, I get a call from our sales rep informing me that Telstra have gone and popped a pit under our driveway and that we'll need to work out a solution as we can't put a driveway under it. I have NO idea about this, and the boy is chatting to the sales rep today, but here's my here's my questions: 1. We REALLY can't put a pit under the driveway? Isn't it possible to put a stronger cover on it? 2. Why the %^@* didn't the builder inform Telstra which side the driveway was on? Wouldn't this be the most logical thing to do? 3. Next steps??!! He suggested flipping the house.... WHAT. That ain't gonna fly with me, the whole point is that our main living areas are on the right side of the house for the north facing sun!!!!! GARGH!!!!!!!!!! Apparently you contact Telstra and can ask them if relocating the service pit is possible, otherwise you pay them for a "trafficable lid" i.e. one that's built-in to the driveway. I'm not sure how much that is but I would hope only a couple of hundred at most. This is what our builder has told us anyway, we'll know more when we actually work up the mental strength to call Telstra!! Krustywan - Who coordinated the pit install? I'd imagine there would need to be a service easement on your property for them to do that? Or is it on council land? Re: Telstra pits under driveways - help! 4Aug 01, 2013 1:42 pm That's really unfortunate, poor communication from your builder to Telstra there. If you ask me you're within your rights to request your builder have Telstra rip the pit out and put it on the other side at the builder's expense, or come up with an alternative. You're certainly not going to change your house plan to accommodate them! Pppft! Seems to work out ok. The concreter was all over it. And it was the cheapest option! moving it was going to be thousands. Re: Telstra pits under driveways - help! 10Sep 22, 2013 9:23 am Ugh. Telstra and their pits give me the $&@#s. I can't even get a phone line or broadband connected because my pit is one of their older ones (70s era) that was constructed with asbestos. They refuse to even touch it or give me any idea on when they'll solve the problem. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: Telstra pits under driveways - help! 12Sep 22, 2013 10:40 pm which cost do you mean sunny? I am not sure of the exact cost for moving the pit, but the figure $4500 rings a bell. It was custom quoted, as everyone would be different of course. Re: Telstra pits under driveways - help! 13Sep 23, 2013 2:17 am daveinthehills which cost do you mean sunny? Re: Telstra pits under driveways - help! 14Sep 26, 2013 3:49 pm So I chatted to Telstra (online chat) about 4pm one day and the next day at 7:30am they had a technician out at our block of land! He swapped our service pit lid for a steel lid for no charge and he said that's all that needs doing unless the level of our driveway ends up being LOWER than the lid, in which case some work would be required but should be okay (if the driveway is higher than the lid apparently it's easy for them to fit a height extension of some sort to the pit walls). Hooray! Easy and free, who would have thought?! EmyN, can you provide the link to the telstra chat? i have tried this, but they dont' know any thing and ask me to call Telstra, and then telstra can't help! http://www.telstra.com.au/help/contact-us/ Re: Telstra pits under driveways - help! 16Sep 26, 2013 4:25 pm Yep at the bottom of that page is the button to enter chat.... maybe it depends who you get?! My lady had to contact another "team" to get the question answered. I only wanted to ask about the cost and how I would organise to get it done down the track but they took the initiative and went and did it now anyway. Amazing. They said if I had any ongoing/follow-up enquiries that I should call 132203 which is apparently the "residential" section. But I always find online chat much more helpful than actually calling Telstra, not sure why exactly! Good luck!
