Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 27, 2013 12:47 am Hi all, I'm after opinions on whether to go for colorbond roof or with tiles. What are the pros and cons? Going to one of the tile or colorbond websites doesn't help, because of course they're just trying to push their own product. What about resale value, any effect there? Thanks! Re: Colorbond or tiles? 2Jul 27, 2013 5:52 am i had tiles in the old house and now have colorbond, i just love the look of colorbond some builders do charge extra for colorbond but i think it was well worth it. Re: Colorbond or tiles? 3Jul 27, 2013 6:37 am We are having a tiled roof. We don't mind the look of colorbond but we just prefer tiles. Each to their own- we think it has a classic look and perhaps colorbond is more modern. There was no difference in price between tiles and colorbond when we signed up with our builder. But we heard that our builder may make colorbond standard and people may have to start paying extra for tiles - but it probably varies with each builder. Re: Colorbond or tiles? 5Jul 27, 2013 8:19 am A number of builders told me that colourbond should not cost more than tiles. I think many builders just use it as a lurk to charge more. My first house was colorbond and you couldnt have a conversation in the rain - and yes we had insulation. Re: Colorbond or tiles? 7Jul 27, 2013 12:34 pm My major factor for chosing Colorbond is that the heat can escape, whereas Tiles heat up and retain heat. So in WA when you can have a 10 day heatwave in the 40's it is preferrable that the heat escapes each night. Also roof access is great for burglars as well Re: Colorbond or tiles? 8Jul 27, 2013 12:44 pm For the access for burglars, we activate the alarm at night. Solves that issue. Our new house will have the manhole in the garage. If a burglar wants to go through the trouble of not only getting in the roof but looking around the roof space to find a man hole hidden under a insulation bat just to steal a wipper snipper go ahead. Also our first house had colorbond and it was still hot in summer and cold in winter without aircon. Tiles have gaps that let the air out. Where's all the tile voters? Come and vote. Re: Colorbond or tiles? 9Jul 27, 2013 1:20 pm For me it was a no brainer, tiles all the way! Love the look of them and I can't help but associate colourbond with sheds. Each to their own. Re: Colorbond or tiles? 10Jul 27, 2013 2:07 pm I think it's just personal preference. I think tiles look a bit dated. Colorbond seems better maintenance wise. I prefer colorbond. Colorbond seems better maintenance wise. I prefer colorbond. Agreeing with EmyN, for us it was personal preference, and the thought that colorbond might be marginally more energy efficient if a lighter colour is chosen. We can't stand tiles. There are so many people in our estate with the old school red tiled roof, makes me shake my head wondering what they were thinking! Apologies to all who have red tiled roofs, it just ain't my cup of tea. Re: Colorbond or tiles? 12Jul 27, 2013 3:16 pm I have had both but would probably go for colorbond next time...... unless the local mobile phone signal was bad. Re: Colorbond or tiles? 13Jul 27, 2013 3:44 pm Tiles I think require more maintenance/ restoration. And if you ever have trades on the roof, you'd want to be sure that they haven't broken a tile walking around or left one open. At the end of the day, it's personal preference. Ha! agree totally rex777 This is the first time we've had colourbond & I hate it for just that reason ! Give me tiles any day. Sometimes looks aren't everything ( I love the look of c/bond) Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Colorbond or tiles? 16Jul 27, 2013 5:56 pm ^^ We don't have that issue-and we have colorbond with insulation. I have lived in houses with colorbond roofs where the rain noise is an issue-especially old places with no insulation! I would much prefer the money on my kitchen We also don't have a huge pitch on our roof and after seeing the beams that went in for the roof if we'd have colourbond I think we would have had HuGE issues accessing the roof space.... I sometimes think it also depends on the style of house for some they lend themselves to tiles other colourbond. Re: Colorbond or tiles? 18Jul 27, 2013 8:03 pm as others have said"Each to their own" it might depend on the look you are going for or the style of your house or even location. Some designs would look silly with colorbond others might looks equally silly with tiles. Re: Colorbond or tiles? 19Jul 27, 2013 9:39 pm We choose a light coloured colourbond roof for it's energy efficiency. Plus we love laying in bed listening to the sound of the rain on the roof. From everyone's experience, what would you install? Timber lapped and capped OR colorbond? Thank you. 0 2824 You should pressure clean your roof first and make sure the paint you buy also is anti mould. 4 17579 |
