I just bought the generic brand and it just fits Re: DUCTED VACUUMING AND VACPAN 24May 07, 2008 10:42 am We are in the process of looking for a ducted Vac system.
PD use the DAS unit which i have been told is pretty average. Can you all advise which units you all have? I have been looking at the LUX and Electron units with 3 points and a dustpan. All prices have been around $1800 but im not sure which unit would be better. Any advise or other units you recommend? Re: DUCTED VACUUMING AND VACPAN 26May 07, 2008 10:57 am PD has the option of a rough out for the ducted vaccum where they just put the piping in during framing/plastering leaving the customer to buy thier own unit and install it later. For me it was about $450 (can't remember exact price) for 3 points. The unit is about $600, PD wanted $1500 for the whole system however as money is intially tight and I have my own preference of system I liked the rough out option better. I just made sure there is a power point near the outlet in the garage, Re: DUCTED VACUUMING AND VACPAN 27May 07, 2008 11:01 am Hi,
Yeah PD quoted me $765 for 5 points to rough it in. (4 points plus a point for the vacpan). That didnt include the faceplates either. So by the time i get the unit installed and get the faceplates etc, it was going to cost the same as getting a company to do the whole thing. Re: DUCTED VACUUMING AND VACPAN 28Sep 24, 2008 1:41 pm Can you purchase metallic coverplates for vacpans?
My builder is putting in a white one - boring. Plus, it won't go with my metallic looking kickboards. I'm not sure who PD use for their ducted vac systems...should find out There are aftermarket power heads that can fit quite a few systems but they are hard to come by in Australia. http://builtinvacuum.com/electricpowered.html The central unit is more powerful but you also have to consider the resistance in the ducting and pressure/flow losses. Suction alone won't clean your carpets. Turboheads and powerheads have rotating bristles that beat the carpet and loosen the entrapped dirt. Turboheads are air driven whilst powered head have a separate motor. The latest upright Dysons have motorised brushes now. I was thinking of getting it and the vacpan installed in our new house but figured the Dyson would do a much better job. Re: DUCTED VACUUMING AND VACPAN 32Dec 05, 2008 8:30 am We thought about ducting but with single story and no carpets couldn't see the need for it, is it worthwhile with hard floors?
regards sean Re: DUCTED VACUUMING AND VACPAN 33Dec 05, 2008 9:21 am Sean we are building a single storey home and are still installing ducted. We will be having timber in the kitchen / living / dining / toy room areas with carpet in all bedrooms & theatre.
My MIL has it in a 25sq home and loves it - so it was a must have for our 50sq home - trying to minimise lugging around a heavy vaccum is what made my decision easier. Plus we are having a vacpan in the kitchen plus another in the main ensuite as it will be copping the most work until the kids are old enough to use their own ensuites. Some things are worth waiting for. If you call going into Godfreys hard to find!!! or ebay, or a multitude of online shops.... Do these powerheads work off a separate GPO or via a 12V outlet on the cleaner? By the time you pull out your powerhead and hose, plug them in and then cart around your accesories - wouldn't it have been easier just to wheel an upright out? It seems ducted systems work best with for predominantly hard floor surfaces than lots of carpet. Re: DUCTED VACUUMING AND VACPAN 35Dec 05, 2008 10:14 am From memory they just work straight off the vacuum pipe - no separate power needed.
And I would dispute that ducted works better on hard flooring. MIL has no hard flooring in her home other then laundry / bathroom - yep her kitchen has carpet (as an aside - do you know how hard it is to find kitchen carpet these days!! ) but she has ducted and wouldn't go back to a vacuum cleaner after using ducted system for the last 8yrs. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: DUCTED VACUUMING AND VACPAN 36Dec 05, 2008 10:18 am dymonite69 Do these powerheads work off a separate GPO or via a 12V outlet on the cleaner?. The powerheads work off the suctioon in the vac! The spinning is caused by the vacuum. No GPO's or extra leads or power required!!! dymonite69 By the time you pull out your powerhead and hose, plug them in and then cart around your accesories - wouldn't it have been easier just to wheel an upright out?. NO! It is just the lead and the head ... like normal! dymonite69 It seems ducted systems work best with for predominantly hard floor surfaces than lots of carpet. I would have to disagree! In mine they work great on carpet and on my tiles and in my garage Re: DUCTED VACUUMING AND VACPAN 37Dec 05, 2008 10:53 am Can I also point out the noise and allergy benefit of an ducted system ?. My parents house (where I grew up) has a ducted system and 30 years on its still going strong. Aside from the ease of use, reliability, weight etc etc the key benefit I see is that the stuff it sucks up goes somewhere else - along with all the airborn particles too.
Additionally you can vacumn and yap on the phone at the same time and whilst people are asleep coz the noise is in the garage. Also the vacpan is the most perfect invention ever. In mine they work great on carpet and on my tiles and in my garage I think you have a air-driven turbohead not a powerhead. As you would expect there is a decrease in suction power to turn the bristles. The posters from the other thread I quoted still feel a dedicated unit with motorised head is still more effective than a ducted system. Most of the dust in a carpet is actually unseen deep in the pile. This abrasive stuff is what does long-term damage with constant foot traffic. It's only until you go over it again with a proper unit that you realise what has been left behind. I guess the best test is to go over your vacuumed carpets again with a good portable unit with powerhead and see what comes up.
