Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 02, 2013 2:27 pm We're currently building, and our block is a pile of mud. Just wondering what others did when they first moved in and their house was sitting in the middle of a mud pit? How did you stop tracking everything inside until the landscaping / turfing was done - it will probably take us at least 2 months - we have a LOT of retaining wall needing to be built. Re: What do you do before you've had time to landscape? 2Jul 02, 2013 3:14 pm Get your driveway done with your builder!!! We did and we have been in over a month, we haven't got any landscaping done as yet, due to start next week. We don't need to go on the clay... I use clothes dryer and clothes airers in the house for my washing... Put in a temporary letterbox. With our driveway we asked for a little bit for a bin area, and seriously there is no need to venture off the driveway. We also have carpet off cuts at the front and back door to prevent mess. Hope that helps. Built a Hawthorne 31 with EB nessjeffdreamhouse.blogspot.com.au Building an investment now with New Living homes... We are at nearly finished... Just landscaping and driveway to go! Re: What do you do before you've had time to landscape? 3Jul 02, 2013 3:40 pm We are seriously in trouble with all our mud. We have an acre and hardly any grass and with all the rain we have had in the last couple of weeks - we are a mud pit - to the extent where a bobcat actually got bogged. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s112/paris-stella/98D6B92F-CCE5-42D9-99FB-F5ADF321DD52-2451-00000098EA7EE60F_zps760967ec.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s112/paris-stella/C97EBBF6-66D4-431B-8E38-119D25ED095D-2451-0000009884339859_zps48349b0a.jpg Our driveway is clay and 30 metres long. As it is so big, concrete is out, so we are having someone come in and put down road base - 60 tonnes of it, so we can keep the mud out of the house. With the grass, we need to wait until the clay dries out a bit and we will be putting down as much turf as we can. In the mean time we will be covering the front and back doors with off cuts of carpet and keeping our dogs outside. Re: What do you do before you've had time to landscape? 5Jul 02, 2013 7:30 pm I've seen someone use wood pallets as stepping boards Re: What do you do before you've had time to landscape? 6Jul 03, 2013 8:47 am in laws are using carpet as their front path, and it works surprisingly well - even after getting rain and mud on it. Re: What do you do before you've had time to landscape? 9Jul 03, 2013 12:07 pm donna61 I've seen someone use wood pallets as stepping boards This was me 8 years ago! Had a delightful "pond" outside my front verandah which required a bridge to get over... pallets it was! I had the road base laid for a driveway, it was certainly better than muddy/dirty tracks. Seriously though, this time around a driveway and perimiter concreting will be the No: 1 priority. It;ll either be done by the builder or before we move in. It was the bain of my existence last time and I never want to live through it again... The actual garden beds etc I can live without for a while, as mentioned in an above post, you rarely need to step on them. But a driveway at the minimum will save all sorts of headaches. They usually throw their pallets away because they're made of offcuts and stuff, not new. Re: What do you do before you've had time to landscape? 12Jul 03, 2013 6:31 pm One of the builder's in our street has dumped about 4 pallets on our block, maybe I should be putting them away!?! Re: What do you do before you've had time to landscape? 13Jul 03, 2013 8:25 pm We had serious clay issues and no driveway for about 3 months in winter - I used all the appliance boxes and really any boxes we could get hold of and they were put down like a walkway and even though they got wet they weren't muddy. By the time we did the garden - I shredded the cardboard and used it under the mulch to help with weeds. It worked - especially carrying two year old up and down from car.
