Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 24, 2013 9:23 pm We've got an awkward little area bedside our lane-access driveway that needs some sort of paving. The driveway will be constructed of herringbone pavers, but we're not sure what we want to do with the area adjacent to it, indicated in red on the photo. We're going to install a double-wide colorbond gate in either position A or B (blue lines as marked) to allow for access to the rear yard, but aren't sure which position will be best. Our gas meter needs to be accessible for Alinta to read, which leaves a narrow opening and path beside the driveway to be paved with something. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We could do pavers, but these would have to be done after the fact since we can't change our plans now, and if so, wouldn't match perfectly. We could do pebbles, but we were hoping to be able to roll our wheelie bins beside the gas meter for storage, so it might be a bit awkward for rolling heavy, full bins on. Our builder charges the exorbitant amount of $70/m2 for paving (supply and install), and since the area is potentially up to 10m2, that's $700. We'd rather not spend that kind of money on such an inconsequential path, and spend it in other landscaping instead. Hoping to get some input and advice in terms of other paving options, prices, or experience with crushed rock/pebble path ways. Does it get natural light? Grass an option? It appears that meter is a little restricting. Would be good to fence the whole area off next to driveway. See if your gas company will allow for self reading or something. I think you can do it and then arrange for an annual read to check discrepency? Well maybe I'll ring Alinta to see if I can get a self-reading meter since having the fence immediately next to the driveway would be ideal. I didn't know that was an option! I'd never really thought about wood...I don't think this would work though since we'd like to drive over the area through a double gate and I'm not sure if wood would hold up to a vehicle's weight. Ok, I didn't realise you would need to drive over that bit. Maybe some decorative stone? If you can't match to the driveway, do something different to make it a feature, so it doesn't look like you just had to fill that bit in (even thought that's what you are doing). Both advised that they DON'T necessarily need regular access to the meters and can simply perform estimates, which we can adjust by reading the meters ourselves and allowing them on site by appointment annually. The new plan now is to simply construct our fence adjacent to the driveway and then cover the new larger back yard with grass. PROBLEM SOLVED!! My mom has a locked gate if front of hers and they just let themselves in. Re: ADVICE NEEDED - Paving Problem Solved 9Jun 25, 2013 6:12 pm Yeah, they mentioned something called a WASLOCK or something. I guess it gets fixed to the gate and they let themselves in or something. I'll research that option as well, but it sounded like it was going to be $100-190 for the lock, which seemed a bit steep for a gate lock.
