Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 19, 2013 8:53 pm Here's a seemingly random question - how much of your slab is visible above the ground once your brickwork is done? Mine is really quite high, showing about 200mm of concrete above the ground, and this seems odd to me. It also leaves me with quite a big step from my back door and alfresco area. Here's an awful photo of what I mean: How typical is this, should I be concerned, and has anybody else hit this problem before? If so, how did you deal with it? Re: How high is your slab? 2Jun 19, 2013 9:17 pm Ours was probably about the same but once you concrete around house was probably down to 100 mm which is not a problem for us - I don't think it is unusual - could not have brick work at ground level - imagine water issues. Re: How high is your slab? 3Jun 20, 2013 6:36 am Ours sticks out of the ground by about 300mm. Once we level out the ground and put in top soil and turf it will probably stick out 100-150mm. I am happy with that as it means we won't flood Modified Fernside 38 Rawson Homes Blog: http://www.thehousethatmatandjenbuilt.blogspot.com Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60501 Re: How high is your slab? 4Jun 20, 2013 7:39 am That seems fine. Are you going to concrete around your house? That would blend with slab. Re: How high is your slab? 6Jun 20, 2013 9:17 pm JazzyJess Are you talking slab or footings? I'm talking about the part of the house base upon which the bricks are laid. I think this is technically called footings, although they are an integral part of the same piece of concrete. Either way, I mean the part of the photo where concrete is visible well below the brick-line. Re: How high is your slab? 7Jun 24, 2013 5:48 pm Our builder has a recess in the slab for the bricks to sit in, so you don't see the slab much at all. Not sure what you can do about it now though its built... Re: How high is your slab? 8Jul 11, 2013 11:03 pm Lurgen JazzyJess Are you talking slab or footings? I didn't know footings and slab are ever together and I'm scratching my head about where the damp-proof course goes. Anyhoo I see your problem, what do people do, just plant something in front? Re: How high is your slab? 9Jul 12, 2013 8:16 am We are having our block built up to 50mm below that line. I have the landscapers in here right at the moment with the bobcat. If you are going to concrete it, it would just blend in. We are doing a mixture of things... Out the front we are building up the block and putting turf down as well as other plants... Down the sides of the home we are putting pebbles and paver stepping stones, to help with drainage. Out the back we are extending the slab with concrete and paving that and the alfresco. Yes I was surprised about the height too... But was most grateful during the recent rains... As we don't have drainage in yet... The water pooled around our house and rose up to just underneath the weep holes... I was glad we had that extra depth of the slab and footings. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive). Would require a mini… 13 39686 It will be neat but you won't have much freeboard. At least they are not weep holes. Are you in a high intensity rainfall region? The regulatory slope is only required… 3 8264 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16122 |
