Browse Forums Building A New House Re: poor brick work.. PLEASE HELP!!! WE HAVE RESULTS!!! THANKS! 21May 08, 2008 10:58 am The mortar width in my house also varied. However, it only become problem if I really look at it closely. However, the finishing/surface of the mortar is unacceptable.
I have several "holes" in the mortar and have raised the question to the builder, he said that it will be fixed before the handover. As other have said you want to check the quality of the mortar too. Re: poor brick work.. PLEASE HELP!!! WE HAVE RESULTS!!! THANKS! 22May 12, 2008 3:54 pm Any news Andrew?
Everytime I go to my place I can't help but check out your bricks. It's so poor. Grrr I'd be so angry!!! Nic Re: poor brick work.. PLEASE HELP!!! WE HAVE RESULTS!!! THANKS! 23May 13, 2008 1:11 pm That looks terrible. We had the same builder (Brisbane branch), same bricks and flush off white mortar.
There's a few pics of ours here: http://picasaweb.google.com.au/bmpdesigns/House Just build it the way I want and everything will be okay. Re: poor brick work.. PLEASE HELP!!! WE HAVE RESULTS!!! THANKS! 24May 16, 2008 6:29 pm Well well well.... my faith in this building company has been totally restored.... We have come to an arrangement that I'm really happy with. they've dealt with the whole thing really well once it was raised properly. The only reason it was a bad job was because they hadn't used that brickie before... looks like it will be never again as well... Re: poor brick work.. PLEASE HELP!!! WE HAVE RESULTS!!! THANKS! 25May 16, 2008 7:52 pm That's great to hear GriffBNE, glad to hear it has all worked out for you.
Would be interested to hear what the resolution is that you are so happy with? Are they re-bricking for you? Re: poor brick work.. PLEASE HELP!!! WE HAVE RESULTS!!! THANKS! 26May 19, 2008 9:01 pm That is great news GriffBNE
What prompted them to fix it? Did they (or you) see the BSA as any sort of influence in their decision to fix it now rather than later? You mention about addressing it correctly - what do you mean as I am sure others could benefit from your experience here? Sorry for all the questions! Builders are people too.... Re: poor brick work.. PLEASE HELP!!! WE HAVE RESULTS!!! THANKS! 27May 20, 2008 7:34 am Ok... no problems about the questions.... this forum has helped me heaps, I can only try and repay...
last week I got hold of the Australian Standard AS3700 which covers all brick work. Then I wrote an email to my builder advising them that the house did not meet Australian standards, and gave example on every wall on the house where it breached the standards. I included photo's and quotes from the standards. Once this was received, the construction manager took notice and attended site. He realised how bad it was and has immediately contacted me and said that they will fix it. He said "I will do what ever it takes to make this better for you". it was GREAT!!! So.... We're getting it rendered and painted for nothing.... I'm really happy with the result. It's a little upsetting because we really liked the bricks, but render looks fantastic! Re: poor brick work.. PLEASE HELP!!! WE HAVE RESULTS!!! THANKS! 28May 20, 2008 9:18 am Well done, that is a very impressive approach - takes the emotion out of the situation.
Take it from me, most builders do not deal well with highly emotive consumers and end up getting very, very defensive when pushed. Ten out of Ten! Builders are people too.... hi- how did you go with your brickwork... 29Aug 04, 2008 12:21 pm I am building and have come up against exactly the same issue (Victoria)
Can you send a few pics of what was done? I am going to see my builder on site tomorrow- better be on good behaviour and hold my tongue. But my situation is ideantical- poor brickwork/ mortar work. Disappointing- you dont spend time choosing a stylish brick just to cover it with mud. But if you are left with no choice, the options can make it look quite stylish. I could have done a better job buiding it with Legos... Re: poor brick work.. PLEASE HELP!!! WE HAVE RESULTS!!! THANKS! 30Aug 04, 2008 12:56 pm i'm having the same issue with my bricks.
i have read the Guide to Standards and Tolerances document and have raised defects regarding my bricks. My builder is looking at those bricks and will be addressed, although i still don't know how. They are definitely defects. Under section 3.09, it says voids and holes in masonry walls, excepting weepholes and vents, are defects if they are visible from a normal viewing position.
