Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 13, 2013 8:47 pm Hi guys, Planning to buy/ build first home and bit indecisive in making a choice on north vs. west. I work in city. I drive to work as my job is mostly in off peak hours and I hate using public transport. I am looking at Mernda vs. Tarneit North Pros: I have always lived here It’s more greener and more safer (I believe!) than west, Land is cheaper in Mernda than Tarneit Pretty much same drive to west , east and city if work changes North Cons: Looking at 1.15 hours to 1.30 hours to drive to work. A non-freeway drive. West Pros: 30 mins from Tarneit to city in off peak hours. West Cons: Not as safe and green as north (I believe!) Land is expensive in Tarneit Looking to commit to one of the lands very soon. Your input towards my first home will be much appreciated. I Can’t afford east. Thanks Re: Melbourne property: North vs. West 2Jun 13, 2013 9:13 pm Hi , This was exactly our question sometime back. We were considering pointcook, Williams landingand tarneit in west and south morang, doreen, mernda in north. We ended up with doreen primarily because of schools and affordability and community. I work in city and husband works in east. We chose facilities and comfort for kids over our own convenience. It comes down to personal preferences and situations really. But if you ask me i would choose mernda over tarneit anytime because of community, land prices and facilities. I have agree with your opinion of it being more greener and safer than tarneit. we still love williams landing in west though but lacks of shcools and rediculously inflated land prices put it back in our shortlist. The other angle for this is west even though has a free way, that's the only option where as for north there multiple options in terms of which way to take to city, just my 2 cents! Hope that helps! Re: Melbourne property: North vs. West 4Jun 14, 2013 10:37 am webjockey Thanks for your opinion Vetra43. I am single and not planning to marry and have kids after a bad experience if that can help some in giving some advice As I said before if the question is mernda vs tarneit , I would say Mernda because of the community. If its north or west, well thats a very big discussion to put it all here. Personally I don't like generalizing it as north or west - its individual suburbs and pros and cons of each and of course budget. Hope that makes sense. Re: Melbourne property: North vs. West 5Jun 14, 2013 12:42 pm When we were thinking about buying land, we looked at quite a few new estates. Mernda was one of the few estates I felt had some soul and wan't just a flat, sparse area with no trees or character. We didn't buy (decided to do knockdown/rebuilt inner suburbs) but it was the pick of the bunch IMO.
